Multiples

Travel question

I'm new here (hello, hello) and have already found that you're all a wonderful resource, so TIA :)

My husband has to travel for work, often with very little notice, and most frequently to Europe for a couple days at a time.

We're having twins, I'm over 35, and I'm due 8/2/09- so, I'm assuming that I'll be considered high risk given my age and multiples, right?  My question is, at what point do you think I need to tell my husband that he is not allowed to travel internationally?  I already told my employer that I will not travel past 20 weeks.  I just feel there are too many potential risks. But I hate the idea of him being gone once I get past that point, too.   Given bedrest and other possible issues that might require his support when do I need to set a cut off date for him?

 Thanks!

Re: Travel question

  • I would definitely ask your OB this question.  Sometimes age isn't the issue-- as long as your cervix is good, you can probably keep up normal activity as long as you are comfortable.

I totally understand, though, my husband has a trip planned for when I am 28 weeks and I am nervous just thinking about it.  But so far there is no reason to think I won't still be mobile at that point.

  • Welcome and congratulations!!!

You are right that your pg is considered high risk -- nothing to do with age, just the fact that it is twins.  I'm on travel restrictions starting 26 weeks -- can't go more than 1 hour from the hospital.  If my husband had to travel internationally, I would see how things process first before placing restrictions on him.  You may do great, have a super long cervix, and be otherwise a non-risk pregnancy.  Or things may start coming up earlier and you'll want to ask him to stay around earlier.

Other things to consider are would your husband feel comfortable restricting himself from travel 3-4 months before your 36 week date? How would his employer respond?  Can you get family support while he is on a business trip -- have your mom or MIL or SIL be available in case something happens or you need help.  How fast would he be able to get back to the US if something went wrong?  Probaby within 7-10 hours of being notified, right?  This can be more than enough time...  Afterall, it is a very personal decision, and it is so hard to know what to do.  GL!

  • Thanks for the input :)

He's fine being put on travel restriction at any point in time, and his employer will not have an issue with it at all.  Mine was ok with it, too.  I guess we'll see what my Dr says and how things progress.  We know there is a conference there that takes place when I'm 29 weeks, and they are arranging travel for that one now.  We feel like he should probably opt out, but we aren't sure if we're being overly cautious.

We live within 40 minutes of parents and siblings, so I'd have support while he was gone, but they also all work full time, have kids, etc. so if I was on bedrest, I'd be kinda screwed and home alone with a dog.  It's a 9 hour flight for him to get home when he travels for work and there are only two direct flights a day, so if something were to happen, it could be almost 24 hours for him to get home.
