Kiddpotomus and Infant car seat Head Support dangerous??

DH took our car seat to EMS to have it checked out.  They said we installed it just fine, but we have a kiddpotomus newborn support in it and they insisted that we take it out.  They said that NO ITEM should be placed in a car seat that goes above the level of the baby's lower ear.  So the head supports are all out.  They said that none of them are crash tested and therefore none are actually safety approved.  She said that they can actually over-flex the newborn's neck during a car accident.

Anyone else here this?   We were really surprised!  I just didnt' want LO's head flopping around in her carseat!

Re: Kiddpotomus and Infant car seat Head Support dangerous??

  • Yeah I think that anything other than what's standard in the seat (usually newborn seats already have some kind of removable head support in there), other than a bundle warmer that zips around the outside of the seat/straps is considered to be not safe.

  • Our car seat comes with an infant support. We were told not to add head supports to the car seat if didn't come with it.

you mean like the JJ Cole Bundle me?  That ends below the neck, so it should be okay, I guess.

  • When I went I was told I could even use a rolled up receiving blanket as a head support. I have to wonder what is really safe now!

Bundleme's are considered unsafe also because 1) they are untested and 2) they have a layer of fabric between the baby & the actual seat.

  • ANY aftermarket product (head/body supports, bundle me's, strap covers, etc) are considered unsafe due to not being manufacturer tested with the carseat.   If you require a product similar to the above, please call the manufacturer of your carseat and see if they have suggestions - they may have items for sale that ARE tested with the carseat you could use.  But, please do not make the mistake of thinking that bundle me's are safe - they are not.   I spoke to a customer representative from them and although they maintain that they are safe, the customer rep. acknowledged that most hospitals won't let you leave with one in the carseat.
  • Yes I was told that NOTHING goes in the car seat that didn't come with it b/c it wasn't tested and can be dangerous. I was also told to roll up recieving blankets for head support, which worked fine with DD.
  • thanks everyone! ?i will ask about the rolled up blanket idea. ?
