The thing I don't get about You-Neek

spellings---why bother?  I mean, most uses of the name will be verbal, where no one can tell how its spelled.   Its not like you'll hear of Caitlin and be like, "Oh, I bet she has a uniquely spelled name...".

So its not really that unique...other than to the poor teachers who have to deal with it and to the child who never gets personalized pencils lol.

Re: The thing I don't get about You-Neek

  • I agree.  Plus, also, I contend that what makes a person unique is who they are - not how their name is spelled.

I really wish people would think about what this means for their CHILD.  In the end, it's the PARENT who wants to be "unique" and they put that on their kid to deal with.

  • It makes the parents look illiterate and sets the child up for judgement

  • Agreed, 100%.

You introduce yourself at Caitlin. Not "hi, my name is C-A-I-T-L-I-N".

  • Yes I have read the post where the girl is naming her son Jayson because she wants to make the name his own.  He is still just Jason.....I hate the whole thing.  Katheryn, Kameryn, Cameryn, Ashleigh, Emmalee, and I have seen an Apryl.  I just want to scream it is still the same old name Emily is still Emily you just look dumb.  Now this is coming from a girl named Gina but her mom stuck me with the spelling of Genia.  So I wish people would get over themselves.
  • I would also add that these you-neek spellings can put a person at a disadvantage when applying for jobs as an adult.  Trust me, I've seen it.

  • If parents want their kid's name to stand out a little, pick a name that's a bit unusual. Naming a girl Abbeygayle is just ridiculous. Spelling a common name in a you-neek fashion does not make a name special, it makes it a hassle. So, just a public service announcement to the few posters who still just don't get it:

"I like the name Addison, but I want to girl it up. What about Addisenne?" NO!

"Everybody in our family, even the dog, has a K name. We are naming our son Khristian. Help us with a middle name." NO!

"I saw another person with a name spelled like this, so it is obviously an accepted spelling." NO!

"Stop picking on me. I only want replies that reaffirm my ill-considered decision to give my child a butchered spelling. I need a hug." NO!

Hee hee, this!  If you don't want honest opinions, don't post it here.

Whats sad is that is a major consideration for me in picking names.  It seems sad to me to not be able to go to an amusement park or store and see personalized ornaments or something and them not having your name!

  • When people make up you-neek spellings, I feel like they weren't actually creative/brave enough to choose a truly unique name.  For example, I just went to the SSA website and name 999 for 2008 is Sloane.  A totally cool name, not made up, and obviously rarely used.

It's as if the unique namers are afraid of being truly creative so they pick a common name and spell it funny.  They're posing as creative minds.

Be creative and choose Degas or Nova.  (Two names of my high school classmates - that was unique!)  or Dolores and Blanche - traditional yet unusual.

Don't pretend that Aimeeliegha is any more creative than Amelia.  It's just weird.

I agree with this 100%.  I saw an application for a Wesleigh (male) a few weeks ago and I definitely gave it the side eye.  I didn't pass over it just because of that, but I'm sure that there are people who do.
