I have the Martha Stewart Cookies book and I'd totally recommend it. It's got good pics of every cookie and they're divided into common-sense sections - nutty, cakey, crispy, etc.

However, I always make Scottish Shortbread at Christmas. (I didn't know much about my heritage as a kid and had no traditions, so I'm trying to incorporate some for DD now). They are super easy to make.
I roll them into small balls and then put a thumb print in the top of each one and then dust it with sugar before baking. This year, I'm going to add mini chocolate chips for a change.
Ingredients2 cups butter1 cup packed brown sugar4 1/2 cups all-purpose flourDirectionsPreheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).Cream butter and brown sugar. Add 3 to 3 3/4 cups flour. Mix well.Sprinkle board with the remaining flour. Knead for 5 minutes, adding enough flour to make a soft dough. Roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into 3x1 inch strips. Prick with fork and place on ungreased baking sheets.Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 20 to 25 minutes.
Bring to boil the white sugar, butter or margarine and milk. Boil for exactly 1 minute. NO LONGER.
Remove from heat and add oatmeal, peanut butter, vanilla and cocoa. Mix together and drop by teaspoon onto wax paper. Let cool for approximate 1/2 hour.

I'm boring. I love chocolate chip, but have a super easy one to share, not even a recipe really though.
white chocolate chip oatmeal cranberry or however you want to say it!
oatmeal cookie recipe, either your own, from a bag whatever, make per directions and just thrown in a handful of white chocolate chips and dried cranberries and bake. They are soooo good. One of my moms favorites and she doesn't like white chocolate.
