Preemies

old preemie worries rear their ugly heads!

Lately it has really felt that Logan is just a "normal" kiddo.  However, when we took him to his synagis appointment today we found out that he only gained 5 oz in a month.  Now, the rational side of me is thinking that he does seem taller and he did really take off walking (and bonking!) this last month.  However, the irrational preemie mommy me is thinking holy crap I need to beef this kid up!  I immediately ran to the computer when we got home to check out ijack's blog!  We have his 15 month well visit on Friday so we'll see what his pedi says.  Oh, and, my girlfriend had her healthy full-term baby girl yesterday and I found myself with those torn emotions of complete happiness that she had a beautiful, healthy baby, and utter jealousy of her completely normal water breaking, laboring, and vaginal delivery!  Ahh, one day I won't be so nuts!!  Thanks for listening, I know you girls get it!

  • it's neverending, I know. Where is he on the growth scale? Really, once they get closer to 15 months or so, their weight gain is supposed to slow down. Robbie's 18month actual/15 adjusted and the doc wants him to gain like an oz/month. He's really low on the growth chart, but he's really short, so his height-weight ratio is really high (like 90%) so she wants him to stay where he's at (10% actual/25% adjusted.)

  • Thanks Tricia, you are always so helpful!  I am not sure where he is, we'll figure it out Friday.  He weighs 24 lbs. 9 oz.  I know at 12 months he wasn't quite where his dr. wanted him to be for height and mentioned that if he isn't in the 50th %tile by the time he's 3 she'll use HGH!  I am really hoping he grew instead of gaining weight!!

Robbie's super duper short, too. Not even on the preemie growth chart. He just recently (like the last 2 months) FINALLY started catching up a bit. Instead of being 2" below the chart, now he's 3/4" below the chart. We've been threatened with HGH as well. it's frustrating because there's literally nothing you can do for that. If he's skinny, you can add fat to everything they eat and at least TRY to do something, but height? What can I do? Hang him upside down every day?

24lb sounds pretty good! Robbie's older and at 23lb and he's at 25% for adjusted age.

    Here's the weight growth chart:

    https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/data/set1/chart01.pdf

looks like 24 1/2lb @ 15 months is pretty darned close to 50%. That's great!

  • Trish has said everything perfectly-  Trish, if you ever get the itch to try another career, you would be awesome in the medical field...I always look to your posts and blogs when I have questions!  :)

But, I was concerned today when Robinson had only gained 7oz in a month, but the pedi said the same thing...after 15 months that the average is about a pound for the whole rest of the year...Robinson is 25 1/2 pounds at almost 17 months.

I want to add, though, that I totally get those old fears coming back.  When they brought out that pulse ox machine, my hands started shaking and tears filled up my eyes- it was like I was back in the NICU...

I usually lurk, but weight gain has been our biggest challenge.  DD stayed in the 5th percentile forever and it was a constant worry whether she was getting what she needed or not. . .Anyway, DD just turned 2 and is only 26lbs, which puts her in the 40th percentile according to her pedi, so 24lbs 9oz sounds really good to me. . .DD wasn't even 20lbs at her 12 month appointment.  According to DD's pedi, weight gain slows once LO becomes more mobile, but not to worry because most preemies don't catch up on weight and height until they are two or three anyway. . . I don't know if my pedi is unique or not, but she has always been really supportive in this area and things turned out just like she said.  It sounds like you guys are well on your way to normal growth.
