WWYD - about Jacob's procedure

We think that Jacob's procedure tomorrow is going to be at 8am and we'll have to be there about 6:30.  We're waiting on a call to confirm that.

It means that we'll probably need to wake him about 45 minutes before he would generally wake for the day.  But no matter what time he wakes, he doesn't eat until 7am on a normal day after getting his last bottle around 7ish before bedtime.

They told us that he can't have anything to eat or drink after midnight tonight.  I will ask the nurse too, but do you think I should wake him to feed him a bottle around 11?  When he comes out of the anesthetic, they are going to want him to eat to make sure that he doesn't throw up.  But, he would be going under about an hour after he would normally get fed.

I'm leaning toward not waking him to feed him.  I never did dreamfeeds, so I have no idea what he would do if we tried to feed him.  He could think that he's supposed to wake for the rest of the "day" or he could go right back to sleep.

What would you do?  Wake him to eat at 11 or let him sleep and deal with a cranky baby for an hour (between 7 and 8am when he would normally get a bottle)?

Re: WWYD - about Jacob's procedure

  • I'm a novice but I would not feed him -- for 2 reasons -- one I am not sure how much a difference it would make on him being cranky and wanting to be fed and being fussy.  I also think waking him might really throw him off and I would rather him sttn given all he is going through -- and have a true empty stomach.  Just my 2 cents, but again, I'm a novice.

  • Definitely talk to the nurse, but I'd probably lean towards not waking him.  Like you said, since you never did dreamfeeds it might mess him all up.  I think it would be better to have him well rested since he's having the procedure but that's just me.  I just read your post below...I'll definitely be sending good thoughts and prayers your way all day tomorrow.  He'll be fine :)  It definitely will be harder on you than for him- that's how it was for us when our Jake was sick and in the hospital...he didn't seem phased one bit.  I on the other hand was a mess.  So happy you guys are on your way to getting some answers :)
  • I wouldn't feed him. N got ear tubes about two months ago and we had the same food restrictions. She was OK. Let him get a good nights' sleep.

This Jacob will be fine....Fenton did not even fuss about the lack of bottle when he woke up.

  • I would not.  I wouldn't disrupt his schedule any more than it is already going to be.  Honestly, no matter what you do he's not gonna be very happy about missing his morning bottle whether he's fed at 11 or not.

I'm sorry he has to be put under tomorrow.. I know how scary that is for sure, even when it's just a routine procedure.  Good thoughts that everything goes really well!

ditto...you will all be in my prayers!!!

  • When Brady got his tubes they told us the same thing. We didnt give him anything after his last bottle around 7ish. We had to wake him to be at the hospital early, and then when we got there he was just so interested in everything else that was going on. He never cried or seemed hungry. He just watched all the people and played with the toys we brought for him and "talked" to the other kids that were there.

They had us give him apple juice before we left to make sure he could hold it down. Then when we got home he slept for 2 hours, and then went about his day as normal. He ate, and acted fine after.

Seeing him after he woke up from the anestesia was scary though. Poor guy was so upset!
