Water Birth

Anyone else considering a water birth?  I really thought it was the route I wanted to go.  It is less traumatic for the baby, a natural epidural, and I am a huge water person so I thought what could be better?  Lately everyone I talk to says it is so gross.  My neighbor said her nurse said a bunch of gunk that comes out of you is just floating around with you? Any thoughts?

Re: Water Birth

  • I am considering laboring in water, but I don't think I want to actually deliver in the tub. I hadn't thought about all of the "gunk"...I guess I don't think that will bother me much. I think I'll be too focused on other things.

This. All the stuff floating around me will bother me plus I know it isn't the birth dh is dreaming of. I believe this discussion was also on the August due date chat board if you want to read more opinions.

  • I think being in the water would be very therapeutic, but I'm not sure I could handle sitting in my own blood and afterbirth. ick.

  • You don't deliver your afterbirth in the tub and you are only in the tub for a few minutes once the baby is born.

  • I'm considering it. I asked last night about it here: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/27358247.aspx check those responses. :]

This.  I am seriously considering it.  I am checking with my dr about it today at my check up.  I like the idea because it is supposed to help with labor pains and the baby is pulled out of the water immediately so there is no risk of suffocation.

  • I am considering laboring in the tub as well- a friend of mine did with her first baby and her labor was pretty darn short (about 5 hours). He wasn't delivered in the water so there wasn't a mess just floating around or whatever, but it significantly decreased her pain and length of time spent in labor/delivery. Her second baby, though smaller, was not labored in the tub, and instead took 21 hours! lol I think its worth a try :)
