Grinding Teeth

Keira's top two teeth broke through a few days ago and she has been grinding them with her bottom teeth. This can't be good. I stick my finger in her mouth to get her to stop but she does this ALL the time. Is this normal? Anything else I can do to get her to stop?

Re: Grinding Teeth

  • It's normal.  You can offer her things to chew on instead, but she'll probably keep doing it some.  I think for most babies it's a phase that will pass.

Nate did it too and it made my stomach turn.  Ugh, I hated the way it sounded!!  Ick! I think they just like to test out the new teeth... I'm sure they must feel pretty weird!  But once they get used to it, they stop grinding them.

  • Ben has taken up this habit again recently.  It sounds like they're chewing rocks!  It's awful.

    Like ECU said, it'll pass.

  • Yep for the most part for us it comes and goes. I noticed he would do it more when he was teething. The pedi dentist told us that adults grind their teeth when we have emotional stress children don't it is more of a physical stress from growing. Hope that makes sense.
  • Ugh thanks ladies. It's making my skin crawl. Ick!

  • Nora did/does this too.  It's just something new in their mouth and they're testing it out.  Hopefully it will pass.  She still does it some now when new teeth are coming in.  Try to ignore it was the advice I was given.  It's so hard though. I try to leave the room when she's doing it or hum to myself to drown the noise out. Ick!
