Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone's 5 month old NOT eating solids???

We tried at 4 months with veggies (per pedi's instructions) and she hated them, gagged, etc. We waited a few weeks and tried again at 5 months - same result. I admit, I tried applesauce (flame away) to see if is the taste of the veggies (they are gross, right?), or the consistency, and she gagged at the applesauce too. I guess she's not ready - anyone else's LO do this? I feel like all of my friend's babies are all eating champs by now!!

Re: Anyone's 5 month old NOT eating solids???

  • We haven't event started yet... I think we'll try the weekend before Christmas.
  • My DD has not had solid foods yet. Nothing but liquid till Saturday then we start the one meal of rice grule for the week then up the consistancy for a week and do that for the first month of solid foods. Don't worry about every one else's baby, just your own goes to a different beat. That is why some believe that its better for all babies to start at 6 months rather than 4 months because some aren't ready for the food just yet.

  • We just started with cereal that's SUPER runny - basically 4/5 BM.  Could you try thinning the veggies with BM or formula?
  • We're not even going to try until 6 months d/t allergies, but I'd have waited even if pedi didn't request this. As long as she is happy (dd), I am happy!

  • I tried - the carrots were like orange water. She even hates teh spoon in her mouth - gags with that, but can stick her entire fist in her mouth and be fine with it. I was talking to one of my patient's mom's about it and she said her LO did the same thing, so she let her play with baby spoons as toys, so that she would put them her mouth and get used to them. So I've started doing that with DD, so we'll see!

The other trick I've heard is to use your finger as a "spoon", to get them used to the texture and flavor of the food.  C sometimes grabs the spoon, get the cereal all over his fingers, then sucks it off.

  • Our pedi wants us to wait until 6 months.

Cute sig pic, BTW! I love her little diaper cover.

Yes - I tried using my finger and again, she gagged. This same mom that told me to let her play with spoons also told me to just take her clothes off and put the food on her tray and just let her play with it and suck her fingers. I'm gonna try that - I just need a day that I have time to clean up that mess!

  • Maybe try cereal if you haven't gone that route yet.  Since it's made with formula, the only difference for her should be the consistency.  I definitely wouldn't go crazy over it though--babies do things at different times.  Mine eats all the solids I put in front of him, but refuses to roll.  He's just not a mover lol.

I forgot to mention I tried both rice and oatmeal. Pedi said to skip it since she gets it in her bottle for formula (since 7 weeks), so there was really no reason to do it. But after failing veggies and applesauce, I tried it thinking she's got to like it since it's the same taste (I used her formula to mix with it). And she still gagged. I added much more formula to make it runny, and fail again!! I guess she's just not ready :(

  • We did and my daughter is a pig.  But I also did it against my Dr's advice. (we were hoping if we gave her cereal at night it would help her STTN... ps, it didn't work)

He recommended waiting because it is not nearly as nutritious as formula or BF (she gets both) and it's more of a hassle than it's worth.  He said to wait as long as possible and to start when her normal bottle just isn't filling her up enough.  Of course with Ms. Piggy, that's all the time.

  • I haven't even started, but among my group of mom friends, we're pretty much the only one that is planning to wait until 6 months.  I wouldn't worry or stress.  She's not even 6 months yet...she'll figure it out soon enough.  Hang in there and remember all babies develop differently.  My DD is a social butterfly, but hates tummy time...but I know she'll soon stop jabbering so much and exert more energy into motor skills.
