wish us luck - cold turkey on swaddling

Yes, at almost 6 1/2 months we've still been swaddling.  DS can roll over, but had never done it in his bed until last night.  When I found him on his tummy 3 times.  I'm nervous since the swaddle has been our biggest sleep cue - nighttime will be hard, but I'm afraid our new (and wonderful) naptime is going to be a disaster.  Wish me luck.

Anyone go cold turkey with the swaddle?  Any tips?

Re: wish us luck - cold turkey on swaddling

  • We took away the swaddle first with naps then overnight.  The thing that helped the most for us was giving her something to hold onto ( or death grip wrap her arms around Big Smile) to help her feel more secure.  A small lovey worked great.

  • Good luck!  I'm afraid we are in that same place.   She's never rolled over in the swaddle, but last night we left one arm out and she was awake screaming sort of on her side at midnight.  I got up, reswaddled her with both arms in and she was starting to wake a little after 4 which is ridiculously early for her.

    I'm not ready for this.

  • We went cold turkey with swaddle AND we moved him into the crib (from bassinet) the same night. We had no problems at all...in fact, he's been sleeping better ever since!

    Good luck!!

  • Good luck! Our little guy hated the swaddle after about 2 weeks, so it wasn't an issue.
  • good luck - we stopped the swaddle very soon because he rolled a lot.  I hope it doesn't affect hsi nap/nightime.
  • We did cold turkey at 4 months and the first night was a disaster.  He woke probably about 6-10 times.  But each night after that got better and better.  We also found that he is a side or belly sleeper, which he couldn't do in the swaddle.

  • Thanks for the support, guys.  Getting him down for nap #1 wasn't easy by any means, but he is sleeping, so maybe it won't be too bad.  Next nap I'm definitely going to let him have his lovey.

  • We put him in a sleep sack with his arms inside (we didn't block up the arm holes, just zipped it up with the arms in).  When he lifted his arms up- they would come out of the holes, so he could get them out if he wanted to.  We only did that for naps, but it seemed to help a little - I think he just liked having something on top of his arms.  we did that for a week, then stopped, and he did fine.  We also did Ferber at the same time, so I am not sure if it was the sleep sack or the Ferber!  GL!

Ooh - that's a great idea!  It's nice to have that in my back pocket if I need it.  Thanks!

  • We stopped swaddling cold turkey and had no issues.  They just went to sleep.  We kept everything else about the routine the same.

Good luck.  I hope he surprises you (in a good way)!
