How are you able to tell when it's really lightening vs. crotch pain just from the weight you've gained? I'm waddling really bad and feel like I can't close my legs, but it seems like it's too early for me to have lightening.

You can tell I'm new to this board when I ask...what is lightening?!
It's the name that basically describes when the LO moves headdown "into the pelvic area" - so he/she is basically just set and ready for when labor begins.

Most people I know called it "dropping" as in "my baby has dropped"
I have that pelvic pain too - I was told it has something to do with all the loosening that goes on in our bodies to get ready for childbirth - which apparently is also the reason I have insane acid - more loosening. There are some things that kind of make it better(pillow between knees, not overdoing it) but basically I'm finding I just have to put up with it.

Here is an explanation.
ETA: forgot the quote the first time.
They say it typically happens about week 36 and on. (at least that's what our lamaze class instructor told us)
