Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much is your 5 month old eating?

DD really likes her veggies...I have been feeding one ice cube (1 ounce) of veggie in the morning, and one at night.  But the last week or so she wants more at night, so I started giving her 2 cubes (2 ounces).  Is this too much, too early?  And when do I start working lunch in there too?  I don't go to the pedi for two more weeks....so just wondering what other pedi's have said.

Re: How much is your 5 month old eating?

  • DS gets oatmeal in the morning for breakfast, veggie (1 oz.) at lunch and oatmeal and veggie for dinner.  Along with bottles of course.  I started out with just dinner, then worked in breakfast about a week later, then lunch a week or so after that.
  • At 5 months they had 3TBS each of cereal plus 1oz of fruit/veggies and about 32-34 oz.

Then we added another 1oz of fruit/veggies.

Today we are adding 1 more for a total of 3TBS cereal and 3oz of fruit/veggies, plus what is approaching 40oz of formula. Every time their formula crept towards 40, we upped their solids by an ounce.

  • My DS eats 2 tubs of food for dinner.  Each tub has 2.5oz of food in it.  I think that as long as you're following your DD's hunger cues, you're fine.
  • My DD eats a whole container of fruit and a whole container of veggie in the evening.  Each container is 2.5 ounces.  (Sometimes I give cereal instead of a fruit.)  I also started giving her oatmeal in the morning (about 3 tbsp).  She still takes about 25 - 30 oz of bottle per day, so I'm not worried at all.
