Por favor - give me your opinion on "Clara" if Spanish is your first language.

My husband (born and raised in El Salvador) insists that the name "Clara" does not sound good in Spanish. He also insists that if we named our daughter that, she would never be known as "Clara" to any of his family anyway, but as "Clarita". He says I don't know because I don't speak Spanish.

As much as I love my husband, I know he is extremely stubborn and is often very closed minded and uninformed when it comes to things like this. If Spanish is your first language, could you please tell me what you think of the name "Clara"? I just need some other opinions to balance his hard-head...

Well the "a" will make a different sound when spoken by a Spanish speaking person.  It will be more of cl-ah-r-ah.  If you're okay with that, I don't see anything wrong with it. 

 

I'm sure he's explained this to you, but adding "ita" or "ito" to a word makes it a term of endearment.  It means "little ___."  Gordita means "little fatty" and mamacita means "little mama."  So Clarita would be "little Clara."  Which is pretty cute, if you ask me.

Thanks - I actually do speak some Spanish (and of course he knows this) and those were the exact things I came up with! And I completely agree with you and don't see any problem. I am just wondering if I am missing something, or if he is being really stubborn... )

In my DH's family, they add "ita" to everyone's name...I'm now Sarita (Sarah)! I think Clara would sound really nice with a Spanish accent, but maybe I am just thinking of how my DH's family would pronounce it. They are from the Dominican Republic. The a would sound a little different, almost like an "ah" sound, I think.

OK! Well, I am officially letting Clara go! A friend of mine from Guatemala just replied to an email letting me know that the word "clara" is sometimes used for "egg white" in Spanish. I think that's enough for me to know! Thanks! Now if we could just agree on a spelling of "Layla"....

Clara is a bad name for Spanish speakers. It's a word in Spanish; it does mean egg white, it is also an adjective meaning clear or light-colored. Don't use Cara either; that means face.

My FI is a Spanish speaker. I thought he would just be like "Oh that's nice" (as usual) but to my surprise his first response actually was "Eh....nah... that's like "clear."' Hmm. Guess you guys are right.

the name is ok. sounds better in english than spanish

ur husband is right, she will be 'nicknamed' clarita which is cute and nice.

but i wld base my descion on how she'll be called most often (ie in schoolsocially).

We are both Spanish speakers and we love the name Clara but because of the meaning in Spanish we did not choose it.
