Back on the Nebulizer for the third time

Brandon is back on the nebulizer for the third time in 1 1/2 months. It seems to be turning into a cycle with him. He gets a runny nose and cough, turns into wheezing and an ear infection so he needs an antibiotic and nebulizer, then goes away and he is fine for 1 1/2- 2 weeks and then starts again. He woke up yesterday morning with a runny nose and slight cough. He was going to the pulminologist already for his second RSV shot this season (our pediatrician doesn't do shots which is why he goes to the pulminolgist). The doctor looked in his ear and saw fluid but said he didn't have an ear infection yet. I am keeping an eye on it since it seems to develop into one. He also said to start the nebulizer again if the cough got worse or more frequent. When he woke up this morning I had to start it. He is on xopenex again but the doctor also said to add pulmicort this time. He wants him on pulmicort twice a day while on the xopenex and then he wants me to continue the pulmicort one time a day until he goes back for his next RSV shot in the beginning of January. This is going to be a very long winter.

  • Oh no :(  Poor little fella. I hope he feels better soon.
  • I hope he gets to feeling better soon. ((hugs))

  • crap.. I'm sorry. Robbie was in the cycle for a couple of months.. it seemed like we'd get 3 or 4 days of healthy, then back to everything all over again.
He's still doing the sniffling/ear infection thing, but he actually made it through this last cold w/o wheezing. I was stunned..

I really hope he grows out of this soon. The nebulizer is SUCH a pain in the ass.

We went through the same thing with DD last year.  I think we were literally in the doctor's office once a week for one thing or another.  So far this year she fought off the one cold (croup which led to a runny nose and ear infection) pretty well and we only did a day of the nebulizer, no antibiotics. So I think things will get better in the future. . .Good luck!!

  • we are in the same situation and it is driving me nuts! coupla thoughts and im going to ask our pulmologist this next week....

it is my understanding that ear aches are caused by a virus so aren't the antibiotics pointless?

when you give a child antibiotics it clears out the bad and the good stuff in the body. so it makes sense that they get sick so quickly after one round of antibiotics. i was reading in Parenting to also give them probiotic supplements to keep up with the good stuff.

it doesn't seem like oral or inhaled steriods do anything for colds/coughs etc. what's the deal? https://www.wellsphere.com/general-medicine-article/oral-steroids-ineffective-in-the-treatment-of-preschool-virus-induced-wheezing/581204
