3rd Trimester

These last dr. appts.

Everyone keeps asking me how much the doc thinks this baby weighs.  I have no idea - all our appts. lately have been in, hear the heartbeat, see if we have questions, out.  I know at the next one (36 weeks) we'll do the Strep B thing as well and that from that point on I'll be going in every week, but when do they start telling you how big they think the baby is?

Re: These last dr. appts.

  • I had to come right out and ask. Don't be shy! Just ask!

  • They don't know so they don't say is what my doc tells me. Unless they do an ultrasound they have no true way of guessing. They can tell you if your uterus is measuring on track (which I ask every time) but not the size of the baby. With dd#1 my doc said at my 38wk appt "welll I'd say it's 7lbs, plus or minus a pound or so!" and he didn't want to make any false promises. It's only an estimate anyway! You'll find out soon enought :) GL
  • Thanks ladies!  I'm not worried about it (almost everyone I know who thought they knew how big their baby was was off...a lot) and figured the doc would tell me if/when she needs to, but then everyone asking got me freaked out!

  • they need to do a growth u/s to get any kind of "accurate" estimate...they sent me for one at 35 weeks because my uterus was measuring alittle small, and everything was fine. they dont usually do growth ultrasounds unless there is a problem.
  • They measure your stomach to make sure your belly is still growing and to see if it's within the "normal' range. Even "growth ultrasounds" are notoriously unreliable, off by more than a pound, or even more. My doctor doesn't "guess" because that's all it is, a guess.
