Ok I?m Muslim, right, but it really, really ticks me off when I see people make their female CHILDREN cover up. Argh, irks me to no end. I saw a lady the other day with 3 small girls and all of them were covered with tunics and headscarves.

Nevermind the fact that NOWHERE in the Quran or any of the other ?rules? or whatever does it mandate that women have to cover up. It?s an archaic, sexist, cultural phenomenon. Ugh.

Granted, I also practice a version of Islam that most fundamentalists don?t agree with, but at least I probably know a shitton more about the religion, its origins, history and requirements than most of the poor women out there being told what to believe in. Grrrr.

Sorry, just had to get that out there. It?s reh-donkilous.

Yeah, I don't get it on children either.  (Maybe this is an inaccurate statement) but I thought the use of one was to hide women and teens of childbearing age away stealing them in a raid.  So I always thought it should be used for mid-teens and older.

No but really, this is why I?m a HUGE advocate of secular teaching. I think you should learn as much about other religions as they can. I was not religious for such a long time, but then decided to learn, so I immersed myself in Islam, Christianity and Judaism and other ?non-majority? religions as much as I could. In the end, I realized they?re all the friggin same, but I really, really liked Islam.

Why? Because it?s actually a religion that is supposed to empower women. Did you know that it?s nearly a sin for a man to have sex with a woman and leave her unsatisfied? And a woman can work outside of the home, and she doesn?t have to share one cent with her family, but a man is required to?

But no, all of this, and more, is lost when friggin asshat men hijack the religion and bastardize it.

I feel so badly for alot of the bad press the Muslim religion is getting lately.  I hate the convos I hear, "oh, they teach the killing of all non-Muslims" "they are such a hateful religion."  It makes me soooooo sad=( 

I had some Muslim friends in high school and they always got the side-eye glances.  Pisses me off.

I took a class in college that was listed as a religion class, but we studied cultural attitudes toward medicine and death. It was FASCINATING. I had never even thought to question doctors before or that there was more than one way to treat different illnesses before that. I honestly thought medicine was an exact science and that other countries were so backward in the way they understood it (or didn't understand it).

It was one of the most interesting courses I've ever taken, and although it might sound weird, it had such a huge impact on my outlook. I learned so much and truly enjoyed it.

I also took a mythology class in college where we studied myths from many different cultures (Egyptian, Iraqi, Roman, Greek, etc.) and that was when I learned that creation myths are all pretty much the same and that, sorry to offend any die-hard Bible-thumping Christians out there, the Bible is pretty much just another mythological tale. It all fascinates me.

I consider myself a Christian.  But I am not about the whole legalistic views of it all.  I find myself being very conflicted at times.  My friend was a hardcore Christian until about 2 years ago, now she is a "secular humanist."

I was raised a Christian, too, but have trouble with some Christian teachings (or perhaps it's a bit more accurate to say the way those teachings have been interpreted), which is why I don't really consider myself one any more.

I can totally understand.  I was raised in a VERY conservative religion and I for sure don't follow alot of the teachings of homosexuality, sex, state of the dead etc.

My Muslim MIL (who lives in Iran) fully agrees with you & practices her own "version" of the religion. She is a womens rights protester, protests against the political regime, protests for equal access for education, abortion, etc & has taught me so much about equality & picking your battles. The woman is balls out hard core & risks a lot to share those views in society, & I love her to death.
