Preemies

Jaundice

Hello!

I don't know if I really "belong" on this board, since my LO was born at 37 weeks, but I thought you could help.

My little boy has jaundice and was kept in the NICU the day after discharge to be put under the lights.  He was released Monday and is now being put on a Wallaby Blanket due to his billi numbers rising to 18/

Has anyone had experience with this?  How long did you LO have to stay on it?

Re: Jaundice

  • No expereince with this...our NICU time was when we dealt with jaundice.  But from what I understand it is excreted in the urine and stool, so between the feeding and pooing and the blanket it should work thru.  However, I know that 18 is a high number, you may want to inform his pedi of this if it is measured at home some how.  I think our highest number that I remember is 14.

    GL...sorry I wasn't any real help

I would guess 18 is okay because your child is much bigger than any of ours were and I know it's based on weight. Just makes sure LO keeps eating and pooping. My daughter was under the lights for 3 weeks and it was a long road.

  • Every baby is different. Some times they stay under the lights for a day and sometimes its a week.  There are times when the lights can be turned off but then the next time they check a serum bili the lights would need turned on again.  Just try to be patient your LO will be home soon.
