Christmas cookies-sand tart question

I always make sand tart cookies for Christmas, but mine always turn out hard, which i know they are a hard cookie, but my SIL's always turns out softer, like they are hard, but not crumbly when you break them hard and she wont share her recipe with me!! Oh and mine always "puff" up in the middle, her's are nice and flat!

Does anyone have a good sand tart recipe???

and how do you make the "glaze" I always decorated them with sprinkles or frosting, but i have heard of people making a powder sugar glaze that's almost clear????

Do you use butter or margarine? Margarine makes a softer cookie, and butter is crisper.

i use butter!! I think i will try margarine this year!  Thanks I had no idea "butter" made a difference!
