3rd Trimester

How many bottles did you want to have?

How many bottles do you think are enough.  I plan on bf, however, along with some pumping and bottles soon enough.  How many 4 oz. and 8oz. bottles did you want?

Re: How many bottles did you want to have?

  • I haven't really thought about a number yet....I was waiting to see what I got for my shower and then go from there. Interesting question tho....I guess if you don't end up getting enough, it isn't really a big deal to go to the store and buy some more.
  • I think I ended up with about 4 of each size for DD. I had no idea what to expect so I just bought them as I went. For example, I wasn't planning on pumping for a little while, but had serious latching issues at the beginning and was ordered to pump rather than nurse during week 2 because I was so "injured" - literally. The lactation consultant called it "breast rest." :) DD was only about 8-9 days old, so I didn't even use regular bottles- I used the little disposable ones the hospital had given us. After that I started getting some 4 oz bottles. Fortunately, DD has no problems what so ever going b/w the breast and bottle. May I be so lucky w/ the next one!

  • I also plan on breastfeeding and pumping when I can't be with LO.  I bought two 4oz bottles and two 8oz bottles.  I figured that would be good for now, to give me a start.

  • I use drop-ins so I really have no use for more than four bottles, having 8-12 nipples is nice though. I just wash the rings between uses and the formula never touches the actual bottle, so I just wash those at the end of the day. I would just get all eight ounce bottles personally...we never used four ounce bottles for very long. They were kind of a waste, imo.

If it were any other bottle, that had to be fully washed and sterilized after each use, I would probably go with 8- 10 bottles.

  • Yeah...I can't imagine you would need TOO many. Just buy the little Medela or Lansinoh storage bags and when you pump you can store it in the fridge/freezer in those.
  • I FF exclusively, and 10 - 8oz bottles are great for us. DD eats 5-6 bottles a day, and I make bottles almost nearly daily.

  • I have 10 of the 4oz. drop in bottles, and 3 of the 8oz.. That's just what we ended up getting from our shower.. I will get more 8oz when the time comes.

  • I BF'd DD too;  we had 4 of each size which for us was fine

  • I will be formula feeding, right now I have 8 4oz bottles, and 2 8 oz bottles until baby starts eating a bit more, then will be getting another 6 8oz bottles. I will be using drop-ins, so have purchased more nipples to make it a bit easier.

  • I read somewhere (Baby Bargains perhaps?) that it's a waste of $ to buy the small bottles. You can use the larger bottles and just not fill them all the way. I have 6 (8oz.) total- 3 Dr. Browns, 3 Avent- we'll see what the baby prefers! I plan on BF'ing, and using the bottles when DH feeds LO with what I've pumped.

  • We are bf as well and have (7) 4 oz bottles and (5) 9 oz bottles.  We are using Avent bottles.  When she's 3 or 4 months I'll get 5-10 more 9 oz bottles.
