Anyone know how they do an MRI and EEG on 10 month old?

Dexter had a seizure last week and the pedi  wants to do an MRI and EEG to see what?s going on since I talked with him at his 9 month appt. about some things he was doing that were a little weird.  He said that he could be having seizures but they are rare so to keep an eye on it. Well he had a full blown crazy one last week. Anyone know how they do this on a 10 month old? Will they have to sedate him for it? I know the EEG last anywhere from 1-2 hours and there is no way he will let anything stay on his head.

  • They will sedate him.  Having your child sedated is scary but not knowing what's causing the seisures is worse.  Keep reminding yourself of why you're sedating him.
Big hugs for you and your son.  I hope they get some answers for you.

  • Ooh poor baby. Yes they will sedate him. My son was sedated for an MRI at almost 2 years old. While it's not fun, it's for the best and it is quick.

  • One of my DDs had an MRI when she was 7 months old.  She was sedated and I would expect any young child would be.  Surprisingly, the sedation wasn't that bad.  The worst part was not being able to feed her before the MRI due to the sedation- she was not happy about that.  But everything went smoothly at the hospital, except that she did wake up briefly during the MRI - no harm was done, she just needed another dose of sedation medication.  When she woke up afterwards, she was a little groggy and a lot thirsty, but was back to her old self the next day.

I have no idea about the EEG.

Sorry you're having such a stressful, scary week.  Hope everything goes smoothly.

  • DD was a bit older when she had her MRI and EEG (almost 2) but the sedated her for the MRI... she had to be EXTREMELY sleep-deprived for the EEG so she'd fall asleep during it... it was pretty rough, and she was hysterical while they stuck all those leads on her head... she has some sensory issues, though, so I don't know if it would be as traumatic for another kid (it doesn't hurt or anything, it's just people messing with your head).

good luck... it can be stressful, but know that they're not in pain.

  • Yep, they will sedate him. Jayden had an EEG done and he freaked out big time, cried through most of it, but eventually fell asleep. He's having an MRI and a repeat EEG done on Wednesday and he will be sedated for both, He had a pretty bad seizure last week as well (on Thanksgiving), so I know how hard it is :(
