IVF virgin questions

1.  I am on day 9 of stims and i am getting really uncomfortable - will this get worse before better?  When is it usually the worst (1 day past ER etc.) and when does it start to subside?

2. I am on bravelle and menapur and my shots are getting really painful and my belly is super sore - any tips?

3. I've been trying to stay really hydrated and increase my salt intake - is this most important now or after ER to avoid OHSS?

Thanks girls, you guys are so helpful! :)

Re: IVF virgin questions

  • sore belly answer: I was told you could go in a circle 2" around your belly button so I constantly tried to switch spots. Also I know some can be given in your thigh; maybe you can call your nurse and ask if it's okay to administer some of the shots there?

  • If the doctor thinks you may develop ohss they may cancel your hcg shot, if they decide to go ahead you will prob feel the effects, like i did, the very next day after er.  I dont remember my belly ever being sore.  I would increase salt intake, stay hydrated and eat lots of protein before and after...i hope if you do get ohss it isnt too bad.  I have it right now and it has been really painful this time.  I also got it the first time i did ivf and i really dont remember it being this bad.

  • Your ovaries will be uncomfortable for a while.  After the ER, they fill back up with follicular fluid.  My RE told me the pain should max within 5 days of ER.  Mine was only really uncomfortable for about 2-3 days after.
  • 1.  For me it was always the worst in the 24 hours before ER.  After ER there is a different soreness that takes a bit to subside but the ovaries actually feel better.

    2. I just tried to rotate shot areas as much as possible.  This last cycle I was taking 3 shots a day ... it can get hard to find a new spot but you just do what you can.

    3. MOST patients are not at risk for OHSS - is there a reason (very high E2) that you are concerned about this?

  • I REALLY bloated up a couple of days after ER and was still mildly uncomfortable at my 5DT, but by two days after it, I was fine. I gained 2-3 inches in my waist after ER!

My ovaries go comfortable relatively quickly, faster than the bloat went down! I was definitely feeling a little tender for a bit, though.

I would inject my meds a little further over than I was supposed to, sometimes, but then I've got some extra padding... I had little pin prick marks all over my stomach though. I didn't really bruise much, fortunately, although the ganirelix got me sometimes.

  • Thanks everyone.  I am not at risk for OHSS that I know of and E2 hasn't been too high - I'm just paranoid b/c of all the stories I've heard and read. Hopefully this worry will be for nothing.

    Thank you!
