Anyone taking supplements--did you ask RE first?

I recently ordered DCI after reading research that these supplements can be very helpful for people with PCOS. They are supposed to help lower testosterone/insulin like met does, only I'm lean and not IR (do have high testosterone though), so RE won't give me met.

I'm wondering if I should talk to RE first before taking them, though I suspect RE will not think I need them despite research I've read on possible benefits for those like me (same as met...).

If you tried any supplements, did you just give them a shot or did you talk to RE first?

Re: Anyone taking supplements--did you ask RE first?

  • If you are doing IVF you MUST discuss all supplements with them, particularly ones that alter hormone levels.  They cannot manage your meds if you don't tell them the whole story and I think you will end up shooting yourself in the foot in the long run.

Anything other than IVF, it isn't as critical to discuss all supps with them, but my personal opinion is that you should.  REs do 4 years of med school, 4 years of ob/gyn training, and 3 years of RE training, so why not pick their brains?  You are paying for their expertise, right?

When you say you "read research" about DCI, did you mean scientific studies or did you mean on internet chat boards?  For lesser known supplements, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet - make sure you either read the medical literature or discuss with your doc.  If they tell you that you don't need it, press them on why.  You might find out something that will sway your opinion.  And if you don't, you can still opt to take it, anyway.

That's my two cents! HTH and GL!

  • Thanks for your thoughts. By research I mean scientific studies only. I'm an epidemiologist, so I seek out any peer-reviewed research I can find. Unfortunately, it's often limited or conflicting...

I will wait before taking them to discuss with RE. It's just frustrating b/c I have my first af now in years, and I have to wonder if starting these meds could help me ovulate on my own. How nice that would be. But I also don't want to screw anything up, so I'll check in with the docs first.
