Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did your LO chew on hands for reasons other than hunger?

LO has started gnawing on his hands when he appears otherwise happy (and less than 2 hours post-feeding) lately. I don't THINK he's hungry ... but maybe I'm reading him wrong. I kind of also think he's just found his hands and is self soothing.

Any thoughts? He's just under 6 weeks old.

  • My DS started at 8 weeks to chew on his hands, that wasn't hunger related.

  • DD started doing this 2 weeks ago. She's definitley not hungry. I think she's just "found" her hands and loves doing things with them. Pedi told me babies can start the teething process this early too, so that may be another reason why.
  • DD started this a couple of weeks ago. I usually give her a pacifier instead. It is soothing or fun for her...she's always smiling when she does it. When she's actually hungry she is not smiling, she is a terror. lol

  • DD just started doing it this week, I try to give her a paci instead because I dont want her to suck her thumb but sometimes she will spit it out. it seems that she prefers her hand now.

  • 5 weeks she began chewing on her hands as a sort of "self-sooth" attempt.  She has found her thumbs once this week too!

We never offered her a pacifier so she may have found her hands earlier as a result.

  • my son will b etwo weeks old tomorrow and has been doing it since birth
  • About 7 weeks.  She's not hungry, just self soothing.  I think it's cute!
  • My LO started this at 6 weeks and I think you are right they did just discover their hands and are self soothing.

  • My Son has been doing this since birth haha He tries so hard to get his thumb (and found it twice so far).

  • I was just wondering this! She found her hands right after birth but has been mostly ignoring them since. The last few days it seems she's found them again because she's been gnawing on them. If it's accompanied by whining/crying I've been offering the breast (if at least 2 hrs since last feed). If she seems content to chew then let her. She's 7 weeks tomorrow.
