Nicknames for LO **Vent**

I know that as she grows up, people will come up with nicknames for DD and she will go by what she wants, but the kid is only 6 weeks old and I have a cousin that is INSISTING of calling her Ari (whom she's never even met BTW). I just want to scream at her that Ari is not her effing name....it's Arianna. Please respect that and call her by it.

Would you be bothered by this, or am I just being silly?

  • If I didn't like the nickname I would be.

  • it doesnt bother me when my family calls DD sophie or soph instead of sophia, but that's just me.

  • I would guess that lots of people will call her that in the future since it's the beginning of her name. You can always ask her to call her something different, but people will say what they want. I would try to let this one go.

  • A name like your LO's that is long makes people want to shorten it.  I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Francisca is my real name and NO ONE ever called me that growing up.  As an adult I choose to go by my full name and people respect that... but as a child it didn't bug me.

  • I don't think you're being silly at all. If you don't like it then you don't like it, adn that's that.  We picked DS's name because we didn't mind what it would be shortened to - the whole nickname thing is a big deal for me and there were several names on the list that we eliminated for that exact reason.

My Dad hated when friends shortened my name in school and he told them so and I'm glad because I wouldn't want to be called that now.

  • I dont want people to shorten Kainen's name to Kain....that would really bug me. So far my family has chosen nicknames unrealated to his real name ( ex: bunny )
  • My DH is insistent on calling our children by their whole names. We did not use the name William because we knew it would bother him if people shortened it or gave him a nickname before our son could determine what it should be.

If it bugs you, I would speak up politely. In my family however, speaking up is an invite to continue to do things that piss me off!

  • My poor kid already has about 15 different nicknames and she's only 4 days old. I think Ari for short is kinda cute, personally...
  • I hate when people shorten names.  I didn't like it growing up, my name is Marianne and everyone wanted to call me Mary or Anne.  I specifically picked a baby name that was not easily shortened.  I would just keep correcting them until they get the hint.

  • My name is Hillary, and everyone called me Hill growing up.  When I was in high school, it bugged me a lot.  Now, I don't really care.  When we didn't know LO's sex, we tossed around the name Harrison for a boy.  MIL started calling the baby Harry.  I told DH absolutely, no effing way and I ditched that name only b/c of her.
  • IMO your worrying about something you shouldnt. Its not mean or derogatory so I would just go with it. Dont be so uptight about your kids name.
  • Lurking from 3rd tri....

I totally understand.  We're naming our LO Madelyn, and every time someone asks what her name will be they say "Awww, are you going to call her Maddie?"  Umm.. her name is Madelyn people.  I have a dog named Maggie... Maddie, Maggie... I'd like the poor kid to have a name that sounds different from the dog.  But my parents, DH, everyone (but me) already calls her Maddie, so I think I'm going to lose that battle.

Anyway, I agree with you, but I think it's one of those things we aren't going to have any control over.
