? about m/s and Dr. Barbara Luke's book...

so I just read the m/s part of "Expecting twins, triplets..." and I don't feel like any of the ideas she gives for combating m/s help me!  I'm worried, because i want to eat enough, but I feel like I want to crawl into bed and sleep until 2nd Tri!!!  I'm throwing up or thinking about it constantly after every meal.  I know it will get better eventually, but how can I get the food in now?  I'm eating gingersnaps, candied ginger, ginger ale between whatever meals I can keep down.  All the ginger helps but is giving me HB, which gives me acid, which makes me eat Tums, which makes me thirsty, I drink water, equaling more acid!!  I did read not to drink water with Tums becuase of that effect, but I'm so darn thirsty...  i'm going home to bed, hopefully that will help me get through this day.

thanks for listening! :)

  • I had the same problem...but at about 10 weeks I was diagnosed with hyperemesis. You should talk to your OB about anti-nausea meds. Zofran worked wonders for me.

  • I am struggling with m/s as well. My doctor told me it should stop soon, but that was a week ago and its still awful. Nothing has really helped me and I would really prefer not to take meds, but if it doesnt stop here soon - I will have to give in.

  • I know that book has certain guidelines for weight gain but honestly, I was in complete survival mode in first tri.  I just wanted to make it through and because I was so tired and sick, I ate what I could and when I could.  Id make a point to have a piece of fruit or some fruit juice each day but there were days when I didnt have any so I took my PNV and hoped for the best.  And if what I wanted to eat for the day was grilled cheese for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then I did.

If you are really sick, you should talk to your OB.  (throwing up multiple times a day every day, losing alot of weight, etc)

  • i lost a few pounds the first tri. i didnt have m/s but i wasnt hungry at ALL. when you feel better, and you will, it is easy to catch up to dr. luke's expectation of 20 lbs by 20 weeks. hang in there!
  • Drugs where the only thing that help with my m/s. Talk to your talk and see what they say too.
  • thanks ladies! I took a 2 hour nap when I got home and am feeling much better right now (had some spaghettios for dinner - LOL). I was just having a really bad afternoon!!!  I'm sure there will be many more of those days in my future!!! If it gets worse, I'll not be shy in asking for Zofran.

  • I know this might sound gross if you're nauseous, but I found that once I started eating more protein I felt better - peanut butter, dairy, beef, etc. It filled me up more than the bland carbs did - for me the key was always to not let myself get too hungry. Hope you feel better soon!!

  • I went on meds at 5 weeks, zofran and phenergan. I got worse around 9 weeks and added reglan into the mix. I got even worse at 12 weeks and couldn't even swallow pills, so I went on a Reglan pump. I stayed on it until 22 weeks.

I also had to eat protein or I felt even worse. Eating for me was always easier than drinking.

I hope you feel better soon!

  • The only thing that helped my m/s was Zofran.

Don't freak out reading her book.  I never read it so I obviously didn't follow her guidelines and my girls turned out just fine.  I didn't even know that I was expecting triplets until 17 weeks and at that point, I hadn't gained much weight due mostly to extreme m/s.

If you are having trouble eating, talk to your doctor about Zofran.  It's makes a world of difference.

  • I don't work so I slept through my m/s when I could. Just like PP said 1st tri is all about survival. I couldn't eat fruits or veggies. I could only eat pizza and fudge bars.

I also lost 8lbs in 1st tri but I put it back on 2nd tri pretty quick.

    GL!!
