WDYT: Painting Estimate

As I've mentioned, we're finishing out the basement. It's getting REALLY close to being ready for paint (like by the end of this week - squeal!!!!). Anyway, my mom was going to help me paint, but she can't do it until after the holidays so she told me to get an estimate from the painter that did our kitchen (massive wallpaper takedown project about 2.5 yrs ago). So we did...here's where I need your opinions.

The estimate he gave us is $775. That number shocks me a bit, but it is a lot of work to do. They would sand & paint the steps from the basement to the kitchen (they look TERRIBLE right now). Then prep, prime, & paint the walls, tray ceiling, & moldings (crown & baseboards). It's a pretty big room - about 26x12 ft.

Do you think that estimate is reasonable? Too high? Too low? Should I ask if he would come down off that price (not sure if that's really an option). He did EXCELLENT work in our kitchen, so I know he'll do a great job.

Re: WDYT: Painting Estimate

  • We got several estimates for paint and it is pretty expensive, but for what they are doing, it seems reasonable. I know my sister paid someone $200 just to do her daughters room. Since they are priming, and doing baseboards and ceiling and moldings that sounds like a decent price. We got a quotes ranging from $2500-$750 when we did our house. I couldn't hurt to call one other place just to see how the prices compare.

  • It sounds reasonable to me. I had our nursery walls and ceiling painted and the ceiling in our bonus room painted all at one time (bedroom pretty standard size but our bonus room is huge) and we paid I think like $650. That didn't include painting baseboards or crown molding.

  • Oh-we ended up going with the $750 guy. He was doing my office at work, so he did it as a favor and since it was our first house he gave us a deal. He did our two story foyer and living room, kitchen, stairway and upstairs open hallway. But that was once coat, no baseboards. It still took him 5 days, so it was a steal. We have painted every other room ourselves and I am considering just paying someone to do the rest of the rooms (2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a dining room) because painting is hard work and time consuming, especially when you have a little one.

  • For all that you're having done, I think it sounds reasonable.  The steps are probably the bulk of the cost.  Maybe get another quote, just to see where he falls in with a competitor?
  • I had all of the interior trim in my house painted (think shoe molding, doors- a lot, and windows) as well as 4 rooms (out of 8, so maybe 900 sq ft?) and it was 1k.

  • We paid $300 + the cost of paint to have our 2 story living room (which includes stairway wall), 2 story foyer, and 2 hallways done.  No prep work or trim painting....just the walls.

I think the price they are quoting seems fair.

  • That quote sounds fair.  You could always get another one though since they vary widely.
  • I would probably get another quote just to make sure. We finished our basement last year and we paid someone $400 to hang the trim around the windows, doors and baseboards and paint all of it. Then we paid someone else to paint the doors and the walls (sand, prime and paint) including the stairway, I think we paid him around $300. So it is close to your total, but it also included hanging all of the trim as well, which was a lot of work. Our basement is 1200 square feet, so I am thinking we got a pretty good deal :) Best of luck, you will love your finished basement, we use ours all the time!
