Do all babies eat cereal?

MIL was talking about how FIL & I both have allergies and we were both fed cereal as babies.  She never gave DH cereal and he has no allergies.  Do you think there is a correlation or coincidence?  Do babies have to have  cereal or can you skip it?

(I will be asking my pedi when the time comes, I'm just curious now)

Re: Do all babies eat cereal?

  • Who knows if there is a correlation or not.

That being said, Charlie never really had cereal at first. I gave him oatmeal after he had already started eating a few fruits & veggies. He does have a peanut allergy, but I strongly believe its because of using a lot of antibiotics.

  • FWIW, my siblings and I all had cereal and none of us have food allergies.
  • My nephew was given cereal in his bottle starting at 1 month old :(  But I think starting at 4-6 months like recommended is fine.
  • We gave ethan cereal at 6 months.  So far no allergies.  My sister and I both had cereal and neither of us have allerrgies.
  • I believe that feeding cereal very early on can lead to increased risk of allergies.  But feeding cereals when it's developmentally appropriate isn't tied to a higher risk of allergies.
  • Nope...not all babies eat it. We gave it to DS a few times...but focused more on pureed pears, apples, bananas in the beginning. Then I would make oatmeal (just regular quaker oats) and make them a bit runnier and puree those as well.

I don't think that infant cereal would have anything to do with allergies. Esp if given at the appropriate age.
