I have heard that these are not necessary and some say that they are not very safe for the first 10 months or so. I'm hearing that the baby can end up rolling up against it, with its face in the bumper and forget to breathe or have a difficult time breathing against it and that I should just leave the crib bare w/o the bumper.
I'm not attached to the bumper at all, but I wanted to see what you all are doing.
TIA.
Re: Crib Bumpers
Ditto Breathable Bumpers.
I wish I had registered for these, I ended up buying them when we moved the boys to their cribs. They are easy to put up. Both my boys love to sleep with their face pushed up against them but I have no worries.

ditto. and they're more cushion-y than I had thought.
We didn't know what we were having until they were born, so we just got neutral crib sheets and green breathable bumpers since you can't use the quilt for a while anyway. I don't miss not having a specific set, I like the way it looks.

My babies sleep with their faces pushed up to the bumpers and they can breathe through these. I tested them myself and I can breathe through them too. The bumpers that came with our crib set were a quilt material and very heavy.
I have heard pros and cons about them but they work for us and give me peice of mind. I agree w/ pp that they look a lot nicer than I thought they would. Let me know if you want to see a picture of them in use.
I *think* what the instructor was saying is that there's no point to the breathable bumpers. I told her I heard they prevent limbs from getting caught in the slats and she said that isn't true, and that they are just a marketing thing. She said it's best to have nothing at all but a crib sheet.
I have still been leaning toward getting them, though.

Oh didn't even think to mention the limb thing. Yes, it definitely keeps them in there for us! The first night they slept in their cribs, I did not have them yet and James started screaming (as he always does) and we were trying to use the sleep train method "run don't walk" in there as per our pediatrician's suggestions. Well, thankfullly I was not a good student and I ran in there. he leg was so turned and twisted through the gap that if he tried to move it I think he would have broken it. It was at that moment that clinched it for me.
Clearly I am a fan, so I think they are great but there are others that would argue the opposite opinion. As with so many other things, you will learn what works for your family. A lot of it is trial and error (or trial and success!)
I appreciate your feedback on this! I had to shake my head when the instructor said that cribs nowadays are regulated so that limbs can't fit through the slats.
I think we'll go ahead and get a couple to be safe, because really, what harm can they do?

Thanks ladies. How many breathable bumpers do I need -- 4? I assume they drool on them.
We only have 2. At @ $30 bucks a piece I just wash them and put them back on the same day - I can't affird to have 2 on reserve. Mine are off white and they do not really show dirt.
We use breathable bumpers.
I have to be honest, though - I didn't go that route because of any potential suffocation hazards. I went with breathable because it was a real PITA to change the sheets with the regular bumper.
I used bumpers b/c I couldn't stand being woken up in the middle of the night b/c my kid's leg was wedged to the crotch in between the slats. Once they were standing we took them out so that they couldn't use them as a vault to get over the crib railing. I have never been overly concerned with SIDS either though. I'm just one of those laid back parenting people. Some may call it "sloppy."
For those breathable crib bumper questions, I will say we had one, which we used in one of the cribs, and used the regular decoprative plush ones for the other two kids (one of which was Gwen's). It's still on Nora's crib b/c I'm too lazy to take it off, and b/c it's so flimsy she wouldn't be able to use it as a step. It slumps down, it doesn't stand up stiff, so I would imagine as it slumps it would be just as much a SIDS hazard as any other bumper. I hate the darn thing. IMO, it's not worth it.
