2nd Trimester

Sushi?

So my dr. totally freaked me out and told me that I could not even eat cooked sushi because it is prepared on the same surface as raw fish and could still be harmful. I am dying to have some and I was just wondering if you ladies were indulging?

Re: Sushi?

  • i had cooked sushi in september, just because it was for my bday and it was all i wanted. I wouldnt make it a regular thing though. really, you cant worry about every little piece of sushi every now and then... or every slice of unheated deli meat, bleu cheese, etc. Just dont make it a regular habit.

  • that's ridiculous.  Sushi you get in America is flash frozen.  If you get it from a reputable place you are fine.  I' eat sushi, the GOOD stuff, once a week. at least.
  • I have once so far...if you trust the place you go, just tell them your concern. I have never gotten sick from my suchi place so I don't worry about it. I ate a TON of sushi with DS and he is just perfect.
  • It SHOULD NOT be prepared on the same surface as raw sushi. I'm guessing your doctor does not eat at a very reputable sushi restaurant. Thats a health code violation. Gross.

  • I had ONE california roll once... told the server i was pregnant and asked that it be prepared on a separate surface with a fresh knife.  I was fine....

That being said, it was just too much stress and annoying to have to order like that (I used to be a server, so I know!!!).... I'm just waiting until LO is born, and then my BFF is bringing me all the sushi I can EAT while in the hospital!!! :-)

Right! One would think! However, there is no way to actually be sure. They do not change boards every time they roll something cooked versus something raw.

  • I wouldnt worry about it- just like everything else in life....everything in moderation!

  • I eat it if I want it.  Here is an article I came across that dismisses some of the sushi myths as well https://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/15/opinion/15shaw.html?_r=1 .

  • I eat raw sushi all the time.  moderation.  if you eat a reputable place, then there is nothing to worry about.  You aren't more likely to get sick just b/c you are pregnant.  So if weren't worried about getting food poisoning before, then why now?  My dr just gave birth before I had my BFP, and she admitted to eating sushi throughout her pregnancy.  Eat a roll for me!
  • I have California Rolls a couple times a month and not at all concerned.

Agree.  I have had smoked salmon and soft cheeses on a few occasions.

  • I have a Filipino friend with a Japanese OB who said that sushi is ok. It's our culture that dictates what we can and can't do.

I asked my OB about hot tubs and she said those were fine as long as it wasn't set any higher than 104...

That being said, I won't eat raw sushi while pregnant, but I do indulge in california or tempura rolls, lunch meat, hot dogs, and feta cheese occasionally.

  • I've had cooked sushi (eel & avocado rolls, salmon skin rolls) a few times and been fine. I haven't discussed this with my midwife, though, but come on. It's cooked. I think it's fine.

  • I eat sushi probably every other week and really it is one of the few things I have been craving since I got pregnant, baby wants those omega's apparently!  As several others mentioned the risk is low and as the article another person posted mentions all sushi is flash frozen thus reducing the risk to almost nothing.  Eatting sushi while pregnant is like drinking a glass of wine occasionally, no you shouldn't do it every night but once in a while is fine.
