28 month old waking at the middle of the night!!!

Ok since Sunday night our 28 month old has been getting up at least 2 times a night if not more Screaming.. i MEAN screaming. he turns his light on and when i go in their to put him back in his bed i lay down with him and he is flipping back and forth and screaming. and i don't know what to do.. he calms down after about a minute of me being in bed with him.. did anyone elses kiddo did/do this?? people keep telling me he is prolly have night terrors.. but i guess my questions is if you have dealt with this how long did it last and what should i do? if anything?? TIA!!!
