Question about caring for diaper rash

I have been looking online but I am confused. So after each diaper change am I supposed to wipe all the cream off, air dry and apply it all again, each time? That seems like it would make it worse since I am wiping the lotion off with a washcloth. Or do I just take of the diaper, pat her dry, air her out and re-apply, without actually wiping any of the remaining cream off?

Re: Question about caring for diaper rash

  • When we use Desitin, there is not a residue left at the next change. So I guess that doesn't help you! Maybe use a dry washcloth?

  • Ok, there isn't much left either, so I think I will just clean what is with a very very lightly damp cloth, air dry and reapply. We air dried for an hour last night and she peed on the floor, but thankfully I had a towel down. It is looking much better. I am just using what I have in the house, some A&D, but I had some Desitin overnight stuff that seemed to really work and it was a sample, so I am going to get more of that for tonight.

  • This sounds totally strange, but our Pediatrician recommended drying our LO with a hair dryer, low setting on warm.  It is amazing.  I have told friends and it has helped to clear up diaper rash amazingly fast!

  • I don't wipe any residue of the creams off because she is so irritated it would just make her cry.  I usually try to blot when she pees and very quickly and carefully wipe when she poos.

Here is a concoction my pedi recommended for severe diaper rash:

Equal parts A&D Ointment, Lotrimin, 1% hydrocortisone cream.

I have used it (but sometimes replace A&D with Desitin) and it helped clear Savannah's up.  Her's was so bad it was bleeding and oozing.

    Hope she gets better soon!

  • Thanks, her's is actually much better already, it wasn't too bad to begin with. I decided to use cotton puffs for pee's and wash cloths for poos. She is not bothered by it at all and doesn't cry during the change. I have been using A&D and a blow dryer and she is looking much better.
