Baby is never going to have a name.... SO likes 4 names. All family names. That's it.
He wanted to name the baby after his grandfather, which would mean a lot to him, so I called my mom and asked her what my grandpa's middle name was. I was pretty sure, but not 100% and when I said I thought it'd be neat to have the Grandfather's names both as baby's name. Mom decided to tell me that the names were old, and baby would be made fun of when he got older. I was so excited about the idea, and then I cried. I know she wasn't trying to be mean, and she was just talking, but I cried without her knowing and have been depressed all day. Ugh. I didn't think we were going to have this problem. I guess I get to guess again! Sorry just had to vent!
Re: :Headdesk:
What are the names?
His Grandfather was Duane, my Grandfather's name is Llewyn Eugene. I'd use the Eugene as I'm not too fond of Llewyn.
SO likes Duane Michael (Michael is his name) and Dana John which is his dads name. He's good with any combination of those four names.
Duane has grown on me, but I fell in love with the idea of using part of my grandfather's name too.
And now I 'm running into the wall with my mom on Duane. I know if I mentioned using the name to MIL-to-be she would cry, happily, that we were using her father's name. I know we still have 20 weeks. I'm just frustrated at the moment and depressed earlier. And still hitting my head on the desk!
We're naming our son after his dad ;
Don Eugene C lll
I hate the name Eugene so I decided that it will be the french pronounciation which sounds much better!
Why not John Michael ?
first of all, don't let your mom's reaction decide for you. If YOU like it, then go with it.
But also, I wanted to add, that Dana is more of a girls name now a days. Just something to keep in mind.
Go w/ what you and your SO like and don't worry about what other people think. This is your baby, not theirs. We're kind of dealing w/ something similar here too, but it's more that certain PITA family members want us to name the baby a certain name that I'm really not wild about.
As far as "old" names - from what I can tell, aren't they making a come-back?
Are "old" names making a comeback? Hmmm.... lol
As for John Michael, my nephew is John and actually that is the exact name that SO's sister is going to be using. So out of luck for that one... I mean I could steal it but I'd feel dirty lol.
And yes, I've always seen Dana as much more of a girls name, especially since I went to school with a female Dana. I was told that it was much more commonly used as a male name on the East Coast. Which would explain why I've never run across another male Dana...
My mom even said in the end it's up to us, which I know.. It was just so frustrating to be so excited and then get brought down so quickly is the main reason for the vent I think. Plus being emotional today made it harder. bleh lol
Thank you for all the input and support so far ladies.
It's your baby, do what you want.
When I told my mom our name for a boy (Sebastien) she complained that it was too long and grown-up. I pointed out that he'll be an adult much longer than a child in his life and that I'm sure he'll appreciate having a grown-up name when he's 40. Then she complained that there were no good nicknames for it. I was like, "Are you being serious?"
This from a woman who named her children with two long and grown-up names.
I told her she'd have to get used to it or make up her own nickname for him (or her).

My DHs name is Duane. He was named after his uncle. His middle name is Marden, after his grandfather. FWIW, I have met a few Duane's, but I thought it was more of a newer name, not an older name.
Honestly, I don't think you need to listen to anyone else's opinions other than your H's. My mom was very opinionated about the names (she'd make faces or comments when we were discussing ideas), which is why we didn't include her in the process. When we finally picked names, we told her and she just said "Oh, ok" because she knew she wasn't going to change our minds.
