Anyone do the "throw away" diapers method?

I'm trying to get Rory back into potty training. She was doing really good and then she got really constipated. If you used the "throw the diapers"  away method, did it work for you? How did you go about doing it? What did you do when you leave the house? Any other advice/tips? TIA!

Re: Anyone do the "throw away" diapers method?

  • Well, we sort of did.  I told her that this was the last pack of diapers and then there were no more.  Everyday, I reminded her that when they were gone, she'd be a big girl and wouldn't have diapers like the baby does.

Then, when the were gone, they were gone.  We use a diaper for overnights, but we call then her overnight panties.  Clearly, they are diapers, but she calls them her overnights.  (they are different ones than she used to use during the day).

A few times I've put her in a pull up when we've gone out, depending on what we were doing.  For example, I've taken her out for quick trips to stores without, but for her tumbling class she wears a pull up b/c I don't think she'd remember or want to ask to go in the middle of class.   So, to avoid her getting upset about an accident, we do pull ups.  She usually goes before class and her pull up is usually dry, but it's a safety net.

    Good luck!

  • We did it when DD was just over 3.  Used the 3 day potty method which is basically "throw away the diapers."  She was pee trained in a day and poop trained in a week.  We stayed IN the house for 3 days and then started getting out and about.  I just made sure she went before we left and every couple hours if we were going to be out for a while.

After 3 days I did put her back in pullups for nighttime, but within a few weeks she was dry at night as well so we went back to underwear.

  • I did this with my daughter when she was 28 months. She only had a few diapers left, we threw them in the garbage. She was trained in 3 days. The first day was awful and I nearly gave up, but by the middle of the 2nd day she was getting it. Best piece of advice I can give is to bring the potty chair itno whatever room you are playing in. Dragging my dd to the bathroom every 30 minutes got old for her really fast. DD was dry at night almost immediately.

ETA: I see your daughter is only 22 months. She may just not be ready yet. My dd2 is 23 months right  now, and she wants to go on the potty- she goes almost every day. I am going to try training her over xmas (she'll be almost 25 months) but I worry that she'll still be too young physically to hold it.

We just did this about 2 weeks ago.  We had tried several times before, but she just wasn't ready until now.
