child birth costs

We just moved cities and shifted to a 80% coverage from a 100%. Meaning we will have to pay 20% of all hospital costs. We are new to the city and I haven't talked to the doctors yet.We live in the chicago area.

Could anyone give me a ballpark figure as to what child birth costs are?

Thanks in advance

Re: child birth costs

  • We live in SC but our coverage is 80/20.  I make global payments every time I go to the doctor.  My last global payment is in December.  The delivery will be paid for then.  The way I understood it, the only thing left to pay for at birth is basically your anethesiologist and other factors that will arise.  I think we're paying about $1000 if I am calculating my global payments correctly.

  • I think I had to pay roughly $1000.00 for delivery of my ds.  however he was an emergency c-section in the end but I had to pay the 20%

I live in PA and gave birth in DE.

  • That's what we have, my guess is you're looking at anywhere from $1,500- $3,500. It really depends how you deliver, how long you stay, what the doctor's fee is, the anesthesiologist fee, etc. I'd probably guess you'll pay on the lower end of this, but it's hard to predict.

I'm out in the western suburbs and will pay $4100 for vaginal birth and a bit more if it ends up being a c-section.

Wow I am in western suburbs too. Is this figure after a 80% deduction?

  • I'm delivering in Chicago (Northwestern) and my OB charges $5000, so it would be $1000 for you. I believe that is separate from any additional expenses I would incur at the hospital, though, like anesthesiologist, etc.
  • The estimated cost (total) that our OB gave us was 3800 for a vaginal delivery.
  • I have a insurance with an 80/20 spilt as well. You may want to look closer at your policy as many have an out of pocket max for each year. Mine is $1500 so regarless of the cost the max I would pay is $1500.

  • Yeah, it really depends.  I have 80/20 with a 2K OOP max...but then all physicians' fees for prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care are 100% covered, as well as all routine well newborn care (NICU or something would be separate).  I am responsible for 20% of hospital costs and possibly anesthesia costs.  It is really confusing!

  • What insurance do you have?  I have Anthem and they have a tool on their website where you can type in a zip code and it will bring up the hospitals and price ranges.  Of course, the costs shown will be before any insurance coverage because it depends on your plan, but that will give you an idea of what they'll charge you at each hospital.
  • I have an 80/20 plan also, but there is a max out of pocket $$ amount.  So, with my yearly deductible and the OOP $$, I will be shelling out around $3500.  I cannot complain too much however, I am a state employee and I do not pay a monthly premium for my health care.

  • Does your insurance have a maximum Out of Pocket cost? Mine is $500, so no matter what, I am not paying more than $500 for the year...
