When I was pg with our daughter I had a lady tell me that I should have had a boy. I was shocked and appalled that she would make that comment to me! I was thrilled to be having a girl and if we have another girl I will just be as thrilled!!!!!!
Hmmm.... I have a brother and my dad still gave us equal attention. I never felt my brother was treated better than I was and I never felt like I missed out on valuable life lessons becaues I wasn't brotherless. I also have never met anyone who has made negative comments about having a girl vs. a boy. Maybe I'm just isolated, or maybe I just choose to surround myself with decent human beings. I think that article is BS.
I'm not really sure why we want a girl first. I also think that if its a boy, we'd be happy too. We eventually want one of both.
But I've been really surprised that the first question out of people's mouths are "What are you hoping for?" I usually say that we would like a healthy baby, but are leaning towards a girl.
My best guess....I am the oldest in my family (obviously a girl) and my DH has an older sister. So girl as eldest is what we're used to.
My mom has said she's happy with anything but would love a girl (dress up and we have TONS of boys in our family--girls are precious...it was 21 years between me and the next girl cousin on her side). My ILs have two granddaughters already, so I imagine they are eager for a grandson.

I think that you know decent people is more likely. My BIL really wanted a boy and even asked his wife after the U/S revealed their second and final baby was a girl, "Are you sure there's no boy in there?"
I will admit, although I hadn't thought of it, people seem surprised when we mention a girl.
I had two younger brothers and there was DEFINITELY a difference in how I was treated. Not necessarily worse, but my brothers didn't have piano lessons for example, always did chores outside, never got asked or allowed to do "boy" things. But frankly, I did by far the best in school, and am the most successful by far with work and relationships (that's a long story there), so I don't really have any regrets.
Wow. This is really surprising to me, although I guess it shouldn't be. I joke with DH (who would LOVE to have a girl) that if we have a girl, I'm selling her on the black market. Our female CAT has him wrapped around her little finger...can't imagine how spoiled a daughter would be! But we'll be thrilled & grateful either way.

I think this article makes a lot of sense but I think it depends on who is raising the children. If you have a father who is going to discriminate against his own daughter and not involve her in more "masculine" activities, that could definitely happen. Or if you have parents that think girls should wear dresses and cook all the meals, it would happen. I have one sister and we did guy stuff with my dad all the time. I feel confident, though, that my parents never would have pigeon-holed me into those stereotypes even if I did have a brother.
