**jewelsonu**and other CD moms

Hey! I need your help! I think we need to do a stripping. We have all pocket diapers right now...all of them are bum genius and they are starting to smell like urine. We've been using the Planet detergent which is one of the ones that is highly recommended on the boards and the list from pinstripes and polkadots. We do a cold water rinse then hot water wash and extra rinse at the end. We're using 1/4 of the detergent like it suggests....as we have an HE washer! And for diaper cream we've been using California Baby, which I thought was "ok'd" but maybe that is what caused the problem.

I know you have an HE washer and remember you had to do a stripping with your stash once. Can you tell me how you did it? Also did you ever figure out what was causing the smells?

  • I used crunchy clean for awhile and I thought it made them smell better.  I have stripped them, washed hte inserts in bleach, put them in the sun, you name it.  Wash the inserts seperately from the covers.  They still smell when I open the dryer.  I am really thinking of giving them to Cotton buns and having her strip them for me. I'm beginning to think it's the HE washer.

  • Did you try the dawn dish soap trick yet?

  • Didn't scroops strip hers too? I wonder how she did hers...she hasn't been on much to ask her. Do you know if Kim has ever had trouble with hers?

  • I was having stink problems for a while too.  I never stripped my diapers, but I did bleach the inserts a few times to get rid of the stink and have tried a lot of different wash routines/detergent choices until I have finally found something that seems to work.

My wash routine now is - cold wash with detergen, followed by a hot wash with detergent, oxyclean, and vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser.  I was using Crunchy Clean for a while, but have since switched over to just regular powder Tide because I was too lazy to re-order the Cruncy Clean online.  So far this has been working really well and we haven't had any stink problems in a while.  I think that your problem might be the diaper cream.  No matter how "CD safe" they say they are, they always seem to cause problems (for me at least)

    Good luck!

  • I would try using a fleece liner between diaper and baby in case it is the diaper rash cream.  We rarely use cream and when I do I use aveeno without any problems.  I have stripped mine two or three times with dawn.  Jillians Drawers has packets of something called sensi clean (I think) and they recommend using those for diaper stripping.  You only need 1/2 packet for a HE washer and they are $1.00 per packet.  I am going to try those next time we need a stripping.

    Good luck

Thanks Beth! Did the Dawn seem to help? Do you have a HE washer? How much Dawn do you put into a load? Yeah see it's weird because I've checked the California Baby Diaper Cream is all natural and the ingredients are none of them are the ones listed that supposedly cause buildup and I can't imagine it being our detergent because it's supposed to be one of the best for CD. Unfortunately DD gets redness A LOT so we have to use the cream. I think she just has super sensitive skin, because we've tried everything! We change her super often, and when she we used disposables for the first month of so with disposable wipes and she got the same way when we were using those. So it's like no matter what we do she gets it. I'm just stumped.

Scroops do you mix the detergent oxyclean and vinegar all together in one section or the detergent in one section and then the oxyclean and the vinegar together in another section? What did you use for DD when she would have irritation, redness, or rash? Did you use something homemade instead of a cream?
