Babies on the Brain

i have a question for all of you dog lovers out there...

My puppy has been laying in bed next to me the last few hours and she appears to be... chewing on her toenails? She is chewing on the nails on her back paw like she has a hangnail or something, but when i try to look at it she gets annoyed and goes to her hiding spot under the bed.

Anyone have any clue what she could be doing this for?

  • There might be something stuck there, or a cut or she's trying to chew her fingernails... try the pet board (on the nest not bump) they usually have good ideas.

  • It could mean you need to trim her nails.  I think chewing feet can be a sign of allergies, too.  Some dogs just don't like their feet touched even if there isn't anything wrong.

I would still make her sit still long enough for you to check if there's something stuck.  If she doesn't act like it hurts, I would just wait and see if she stops doing it.

  • It is possible her nails are too long and bothering her?

  • I agree with what others have said.  My dog chews on her toenails if I neglect them, but you should try to check her paws to make sure it isn't something more serious.

  • It could also be allergies.  My dog was doing this for a while - chewing his nails, licking his paws - and when I brought him into the vet for an ear infection she asked me if he was doing just that!  We put him on a low-dose of Benedryll and it's really helped.
