is a specialize one necessary? i looked at the diaper champ (no special bag needed=yay!) and the daiper genie. I'm leaning towards the champ because I can buy any bags.
I have the diaper dekor and really like it. No stinky smells coming out of it at all. You do need to buy their refills, but they aren't expensive and one refill seems to last a really long time. As in I just put in the first refill 2 weeks ago which means the first bag lasted 7 weeks!
I had the diaper champ and I didn't like it. You can't just throw anything into because it will get stuck, little cotton puffs or swabs. You also have to make sure the diaper is really well folded with the wipes INSIDE it or the poopy wipes get stuck too. Plus you have to move the handle to get it in the pail, so with pee/poopy hands it doesn't work so well. I ended up selling mine on Craigslist and got a Simple Human can with a foot pedal. Everyone else seems to love it, so maybe mine was defective.
ETA: You do need to change the bag like once every 3 days on the Champ, but it does hold the smell in, but once the bag is out the can itself stinks. Once we got the other can, and she was eating more, we just ended up using grocery bags to throw the poopy diapers in and take them right to the outside trash.

we just use a grocery bag lol. we just change it out every day or two - and honestly by then it's full anyways! it really isn't smelly honestly - unless there's a huge poop diaper in there, in which we go ahead and toss the bag out at that point.

I've been very happy with my Diaper Champ. I like that I can use any garbage bags with it. I think all of them get stinky if you don't change the bag every few days. It's not been stinky and we have a very nosy dog and he hasn't been interested in it at all. I agree, you can't put trash in it because it may get stuck. We just use it for diapers.

We like our Diaper Champ too. We only have to change the bag about once a week or so. But Holly is in DC during the day, and we also change a lot of diapers downstairs (and just throw them in our big trash can in the garage).
I liked my Diaper Champ (when we used disposable diapers). But Dbert was right about throwing just wipes or cotton balls, etc. in there...they always get stuck & it's SO frustrating! I'm pretty sure that would happen with most products like that though. Overall, I'd recommend it.

I was OK with it, but DH was getting really annoyed, and it is very frustrating, especially w/ a screaming newborn, it is one less hassle to deal with.

We had a normal pail until AT was 1 I think, then I just couldnt take the smell anymore so I bought a genie at a consignment sale. It was the old one not the new kind. The refills last 6 weeks, and I have been very happy with it so far.
I think the best part is how long the refills last....and thank goodness the smell is gone!

I love our diaper champ. (well as much as one loves a diaper pail!) I think we have to empty it about 2x a week. I buy cheapo trash bags from the grocery store and it works great. You can't pitch trash in it - its just for diapers. I don't ever notice a smell from it. DH always sprays lysol in it when he empties the bag. (That's his job!!)
We use a regular stainless steal garbage can. We empty it every 2 days when we wash the diapers. CDs don't have the sposie smell though, so I'm not sure it'd work as well if you're using sposies.
