Is my name spelled the "normal" way?

I'm just curious what you think. Would you spell it Lindsay or Lindsey? Which way do you think is the "right" or more "normal" way to spell it?

  • Lindsay.

  • They are both right. Lindsay/Lindsey is like Ann/Anne. There is no right way.
  • I know both, but I grew up with 2 girls named Lindsay so that's how I think to spell it.

This. It's not like a youneek spelling like lynndzie.

  • I prefer Lindsay.  My cousin spells her name that way, and the only other girl I know with your name spells it Lyndsay.
  • I think Lindsay is the correct spelling.

This, I think they are both considered normal

  • I always thought Lindsey.  There was a gal at our HS that was Lindsay but prounced it Lind-SAY.
  • It can be either way for a girl.

Lindsey is typically for males though.

  • I see it both ways about the same amount, so I have no idea!  I always wonder which is "right" for my name-Rachel or Rachael.

  • My best friend when I was a kid was Lindsey, so that's how I think to spell it. It looks better to me, plus the pronunciation is closer to the spelling.

Speaking of  youneek spellings, I also grew up with a guy named Lynzi.

Rachel is much more common.  I think Rachael looks funny.

ETA: The root of Rachel is the Hebrew name "Ra-chel" (with a guttural "ch" sound in the middle). On the other hand, Michael is the from the Hebrew name "Mi-cha-el" (with a guttural "ch" sound).  So according to that logic, Rachael would be "Ra-cha-el" which isn't a name in Hebrew as far as I know.

  • Most Lindsays I know spell it that way. If I met a Lindsay I would assume it was spelled that way. I do know a Lyndsay too.

I agree with this, but I alway spell it Lindsey because that's how my childhood best friend spelled it.

  • Lindsay for a girl

    Lindsey for a boy

  • I think both are fine. I see Lindsey more, I think, but Lindsay is perfectly acceptable!

    Now if it were Lendseigh...

  • I know a Lindsey/Lindsay/Lyndsi.

  • Traditionally boys spell it with "ley" while girls are "lay"
  • My sister spells it Lindsay and my SIL spells hers Lindsi.
  • Thanks. I always wondered how other people perceived the spelling of my name. According to the social security website, Lindsey is slightly more popular way of spelling it (Lindsey is like 250 and Lindsay is like 300). People always seem to assume my name is spelled Lindsey, which always made me feel like my name was spelled weird.

Whenever people ask, I always explain the lindsay=girl, lindsey=boy thing, using Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac as my example. :)

I also think they are both ok.

  • I'm a Lindsey and I don't like the AY spelling. Not sure why other than to me it looks like it should be pronounced like SAY even if that isn't correct.

In my experiance I know more girls that spell it Lindsey than AY and I don't know any actual men named Lindsey personally. That being said I would never have named myself Lindsey and or any other spelling of it.I've never really enjoyed the name.

I do think its like the Ann/Anne thing (my middle name is Ann  so this is extra funny)

I feel the same way. Don't hate it - but I wouldn't have picked it.
