How old were your babies before you put them on rice cereal and what was the reason you began the rice cereal? My babies are 3 months old on Sunday and nothing my son eats satisfies him, he's always hungry! He takes 5-6 ounces every 3-4 hours or on demand and most of the time we have to give him more in a feeding. He'll eat for 20-30 min, we hold him for about 15 min but then he's starving for me. So we get him another ounce or two. Our pedi said she doesn't recommend infants on rice cereal until 4 months old and with our preemies she said it wouldn't be until 6 months old, I can't see that for this boy! They were born at 31 1/2 weeks gestation, he's already almost 14 pounds. My daughter is almost 10 pounds and I'd like to use it for her reflux as well but she's already on Simply Thick so it's working, not in as much as a rush. Would you go against your pedi if you felt this was the right thing? I don't even know if it's the right thing to do, it seems some preemies on here are already on it. She told us their digestive systems won't be developed enough for it, but again, I see some others that use it.
Re: rice cereal
DD was born at 31w6d and came home from the hospital after 31 days. When she first came home we used rice cereal to thicken her formula for a couple of weeks. It made her gassy and constipated so we had to use simply thick instead. When she was 4 months old we were told to start baby food with her but to skip the rice cereal because her system probably still couldn't handle it.
I hope you find something that works!
Your boys are SO adorable!
OP, I wouldn't go against the pedi's advice. Sounds like you little boy is doing GREAT without the need for cereal. Sorry he's insatiable but just keep feeding him - he;s flourishing!
Our pedi said we had to wait until DD took 4 oz. in her bottle before starting foods. But she would just stare at us and pretend to eat for the last 3 or so weeks. Plus she's had ice cream on her lips and I gave her a couple of crumbs from a cider mill donut. That convinced me it wouldn't hurt to give her a little oatmeal with her bottle before bed. I mix it with her formula so she's not losing any calories and she only gets 3 to 5 baby spoonfuls. She loves it! Looks like a little bird with her mouth open for more.
If DS is so hungry all the time I would talk to the dr. about adding some cereal to his diet.
