Blood on crib sheet

I'm freaking out a little bit here. Yesterday morning, DH got DS out of bed and noticed that he had a little blood on his lip and that there was some blood on his crib sheet.  Last night, DH decided to casually mention it to me ("uh, duh... I didn't think it was a big deal").  Ok... so the "big deal" has already been discussed with DH.

Anyway, DS has had a stuffy nose and cough this week. No temperature and he saw the pedi last Friday who said that his lungs were clear and he prescribed a decongestant.

Any thoughts on what this could be? I can only think that a) he is coughing up blood which makes me panic or b) it's from his teeth.  We have a pedi appt. in an hour. Just want to see if anyone has any idea what this could be.  Also, is there anything in particular I should be requesting at the pedi as far as testing is concerned?  Blood test?

TIA!

Re: Blood on crib sheet

  • This happened to one of my friends and it was coming from his molars. Hopefully its nothing to be concerned about!
  • Is there any way he could have rolled over in his sleep and knocked his mouth on the bars of the crib?

This is what DH thought, but for the amount of blood (about the size of my fist) I would think that I could see a cut. I don't see anything.

  • Was it maybe from his lip?

ETA: Nevermind that'd be a lot of blood to be coming from his lip.

  • Could it have been from his nose?  I tend to get bloody noses from the dry air in furnaces.
  • Was the blood pretty thick in color? I'm thinking if it was coming from his teeth it would be lighter since it would probably be mixed with drool.

Yes, it's sort of light.  Wouldn't it mix with drool if he coughed it up too?

  • It easily could have been from his nose.  Probably had a small nosebleed at night.

My DD had some blood on her sheet a couple of weeks ago.  Turns out she scratched her ear in her sleep and it bled a little.

If he coughed it all at once, I think there'd be less drool, but yeah there would probably be some. If it was from his teeth it may have come out more slowly. You can probably rule out a nosebleed though, although I think you'd know if it was a nosebleed anyway.

  • It probably from his nose. When DS was in the hospital a couple weeks ago, his nose started bleeding...the repiratory therapist said if they have thick snot, it can tear the membranes in their nose causing some blood.
  • I'm thinking it's not a nosebleed only because there was blood on his lip and nothing around his nose.

Thanks for all of your responses. I'm off to the pedi with the sheet in hand (yes, I will be that mother today).  I'll post a follow up later.
