Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2nd time (or more moms)........L/D?

Was your L/D easier w/ your second, third, etc. child?

The reason I am asking is because my pregnancy was so easy, but I had an awful L/D experience! I went in at 6PM & didn't have DS until 7:23 PM the next night (I was10 Cm & ready to go at 11 AM, but had some issues)!!

DS's heart rate dropped so low at one point, that they had to give me a shot to stop my contractions.

I also ended up w/ a fever & DS passed meniconium (sp) inside of me.

DS was also sunny-side up & a PITA to push down the birth canal.

The NICU unit took DS for 30 minutes before I got to see him.

I guess I am already a worried mess about L/D. Please share your experiences.

Re: 2nd time (or more moms)........L/D?

  • I had a pretty easy labor birth with DS (12 hours of labor, pushed for an hour and he was also sunny side up). I had to have a c-section with DD because of complications we found after DS was born. Sorry, I'm not much help.

  • I'm interested to hear as well.  I had a long labor (not as long as yours), combined with fever, vomiting, meconium, etc.

I will say that my mom labored a long time with me.  A year and a half later, she delivered my sister in less than 4 hours.

  • way easier the second time.  I had an easy pg with both.  I started early labor with DD on Saturday night and she was not born until Tuesday morning.  Other than it being long I really didn't have problems like you mention.  With DS I went in to have my water broke because he kept failing the NST.  I was 5 days over due and already 4 cm when I arrived.  My water was broke at 2pm and DS was born at 4:18 pm after 3 pushes.  He was so quick I almost didn't get an epi (well I didn't but I got set up for one and got the interthercal shot).
  • both of mine were easy (i was lucky with my inductions), but dd2 was a shorter labor altogether.

  • It truly is different each time and you can not base one experience off of another.

I had the opposite of your experience.  L&D with #1 was a breeze.  He was 3 weeks early.  Walked into the hospital 5cm and delivered 6 hours later with no problems.

With #2 I never dropped, had to be induced, started pushing when she flipped sunny-side up, labored down for 2 hours to try and get her to flip, started getting a fever from the labor, pushed for another hour and then had to have a c-section to get her out.  Turns out she was too big for my pelvis (at a whopping 7.7 pounds).

I know it's hard, but try not to stress too much, because each labor experience is different just like each baby is different.

     Good luck!

  • DD's labor was long - 26 hours from water breaking until she was born.  Not a horrible experience, just long and draining and recovery was tough.

DS was a dream.  Woke up with strong contractions, went to the hospital and was 8cm.  He was born less than 2 hours later with very little pushing.  I was up and walking around a few hours later.  I went home the next day.  I'm really hoping this time around is just as easy.  If birthing every baby was as easy as DS, people would have more kids!

  • Pregnancy #2 was much harder....I puked for 7 months but also found out I had gallstones week 38.  I woke up at 5:30 am and delivered at 9 am.  First time around 12 pm and delivered at 6:41 pm.  Second baby was breech until week 36 which really had me in a tizzy.  Midwife told me second babies are more apt to be breech and flip later.  GL to you!!!
  • Well, my first L/D was fine, but my 2nd ended up an unexpected emergency c/s at 35wk, 5d due to a non-reassuring NST, failing the acoustical stimulation test, and only scoring 2 of 10 on the BPP.  I wasn't in labor when I went in for monitoring so I don't feel my birthing experiences can really answer your question.  1st delivery was vaginal and 2nd was c/s.

  • Pregnancy was way harder with my second. Labor was much longer with the second (I thought it would be the other way around), but much easier. I pushed for 15 minutes with the first and only 3 times with the second.
