Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone live near D.C./Baltimore area??

I'm so excited....DH just accepted a job offer at Ft. Meade as a CIVILIAN (Woo-hoo he's getting out of the military!!) and we are starting to look for nice areas to live.  We will probably be renting for a few months and then hopefully purchase a home.  I've seen/heard good things about Columbia, MD but just wanted to ask if anyone lives in this area if they can recommend anything!

I'm so excited to finally be on the mainland, close to family, have seasons, wear sweaters and jeans again...

  • I'd recommend you hit the DC local board, its pretty active and full of helpful gals.

  • I live about 15 miles south of Columbia. It is really nice there. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions!
  • Congrats! DH was stationed at Meade before he got orders to Hood and then Afghanistan. I'm still here, I like it a lot and we own so we aren't going anywhere.

DH is getting out soon (Feb!) and has a job lined up at Meade too.

Columbia is a great starting point for you but it is a bit of a commute. There are basically only two routes to get from Columbia to Meade. Either MD-32 (Highway) or Rte-175 (street, one lane each way). I would say that on a good day, it would take him 20-25 minutes to get from there to here. My husband hates driving so we opted to live a lot closer since I work from home everyday.

PM me and I'll give you the specifics and my contact info.

  • YAYYA another MD girl!  Columbia is nice...expensive but nice.   I would also recommend Ellicott city or even Pasadena.   It all depends on how far you are willing to commute for work.

I'm a little west of Columbia and agree that it's nice there.  I'm also available to answer any questions if you want to PM me.  Congrats!

  • You're in Oahu now? My father is stationed there currently, but is retiring next month.

We live in Baltimore- there are a lot of nice neighborhoods in Towson/Timonium.

  • You are a girl after my own heart.  After being able to commiserate with me about HI, you are moving to my hometown!  Columbia used to be a BEAUTIFUL area and def my first choice in place to live.  Has my favorite mall, a small venue that does concerts, lots of little lakes, a community college with lots of artsy classes, 15 minutes from downtown b-more, 25 min from Annapolis (swoon!!!), and a quick ride to DC.  You are in for a treat!!!

However, my cousin is a sheriff in Columbia and we were recently talking about the area and he informed me that in the last two years the area has really really changed and he is now a VERY busy guy.  He said that the problems are fairly local, but quickly spreading as the area is becoming more and more renter friendly (which unfortunately tends to bring crime along with it).  I say get an agent who is very familiar with Howard County.  If you are open to places other than Columbia I would HIGHLY recommend Odenton, Severn is patchy, but has its nice areas, Hanover (same as Severn), Gambrills is wonderful, and Crofton is great (albeit a tad pricy).

If you choose to go in the Anne Arundel County (where Ft. Meade is) area let me know, as I know a GREAT real estate agent who specializes in AACo and deals with lots of military relocations.

Good luck and know that I am sick with envy.

ps-- I also know some ladies there with kids our kids ages... I'm just saying.

  • Yes we're on Oahu right now, and we will be likely leaving in March!  I'm really excited...thanks for the rec's!  We are going to buy a home in the area but it is definitely much pricier than we expected.  Our first priority is good schools, safe area, and hopefully not too long of a commute.

We also both plan to go back to school for our masters, and we are looking at going to schools in DC, so hopefully we can be close by to the metro to get into town.  I've heard DC is horrible for traffic!  Thanks, I will PM you guys with more detailed questions when they come up!

That is too funny!  I was actually born in Bethesda and we lived in Annapolis when I was really little, so I feel like I am *sort of* coming home!  Thanks, I will definitely look into those areas and most likely contact you when the time gets closer...right now we are just looking for areas to rent for a bit before making a final decision on where we will buy a home.  Ok, I'm going to PM you in a second here...

  • We're down in Southern Maryland, so about 45mins from BMore and about 15mins from DC.

I love the DC Metro area. I am not too familiar with the areas North but it seems like Columbia, Annapolis, Ellicott City and Baltimore are pretty popular.

  • I live about 5 minutes from Ft. Meade!  yay!!  There are a ton of military/government workers in my neighborhood.  If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email at cleeksock @ hotmail.com.

I'm an Army brat and whenever my mom comes to visit we go to the PX and commissary on base!  We're going this weekend :)

Columbia is really nice, you may also want to look at Gambrills or Odenton (Piney Orchard is a nice community).  They're in Anne Arundel County and about 15 minutes from Ft. Meade.
