Some of the people I've friended on FB have seen this, but I thought I'd share my rage and disgust.
There is a local news story of a 19 year old girl (unmarried, fwiw) that gave birth in her apartment and then tossed the baby (in a garbage bag) in the dumpster. Originally they thought the baby was just hours old and it's come out that the baby was about 12 hours old. The "mother" (if you can call her that) claims she thought the baby was dead, which is why she threw it away. Another apartment-dweller went to take their trash out and heard the baby crying. (FYI, the baby was taken to the hospital, is in good condtion and is currently with cps).
Originally she denied being pregnant, having a baby or throwing it away. They traced the garbage in the bag back to her apartment, confronted her again, she denied it again, even giving them permission to search her apartment. They found traces of blood and got a warrant to search and to give her an exam. On the way to the hospital, she finally confessed.
As the story is unfolding, people are claiming that the 19 year old was abused, neglected, on drugs, hiding her pregnancy, etc (they are still coming out with various details). Her friends are claiming to news sources that she didn't have a car so she couldn't drive to the hospital, that her cell phone was out of minutes (which is why she couldn't call 911), she has mental issues (but she's still caring for her two younger sisters) etc.
They are setting her up for attempted murder. Locally, most of the people think they should throw the book at her, but there is a growing crowd of people supporting her and saying she couldn't help it, she was abused/mentallyill/scared/under stress/etc.
As a further fyi, our state has a safe haven law where mothers can drop off their babies with no questions asked, for the first 45 days of the newborns life.
What do you think they should do? (I'll be back to check in at lunch time, my break is over).
Re: Disgusted (Sad warning) Discussion
That is bullshiit. All cell phone will dial 911 anytime if they have any power. It's against the law if they don't.
She should go to prison.
This is my gut instinct. BUT, if she is mentally unstable, part of me thinks that should be taken into consideration. I am disgusted and saddened by this ESPECIALLY in a state with the safe haven law.
I hope she gets the book thrown at her.
Stories like this make me shake with rage. A guy in my class in college threw his baby in a dumpster and served less than two years for it. It's been about 13 years, and I can't believe he's still not in jail.
And Jail if she is fit.
this. I think she needs mental help.
At first I thought this was some kind of broken english, but I figured it out.
This is sad. I think a very thorough mental health evaluation. If it turns out she is sane and knew what she was doing, put her under the jail.
This first.
Then, if she is mentally fit she should stand trial for whatever charges they deem appropriate. This is why safe haven laws were created.

First off, like wee said, cell phones dial 911 in emergencies so that is not an excuse.
Secondly, I"m sorry, but if anyone (her friends or what not) knew she was pregnant, then she should have been under watch if she's truly mentally ill.
There is no excuse for this. If she is already labelled mentally ill, she should be locked away, and she already is labelled that.
Let's try this again...
I didn't know about that. I'll definitely remember now though.
Like others have mentioned, if she is found competent, then perhaps they may consider tossing her in a garbage bag, then into a dumpster, after removing her ability to feed/care/help herself. I question how she was capable of taking care of her siblings if she was so mentally ill.. That's just me though...
These kind of stories make me sick.
Happy the baby is doing okay though.
