Wait till the first day of red flow. Well, it'll probably be the second day, since you don't know it's the first day until after you're already up for the day, presumably. Just make sure to mark cycle day 1 as the first day of red flow, and you can start putting in temps on CD2.
Depends who you ask - I always temped through my period, but I know a lot of people don't.
Oh and ::squee:: for no more BCP! I hope it changes your life like it did mine - I was a psycho hormonal biitch on it, and was such a happier person off :-)
When I decided to start temping, I just started, and frankly it was good I did. The first week or two I was nervous I would screw something up, and had issues sleeping, which affected my temps. The extra time will give you a chance to settle into a routine before the numbers really matter.

It totally had no impact on me whatsoever, but it's been 7 years so I think I've adjusted.
