I was at a holiday fair this weekend and there was a booth representing a women's & children's shelter for women who leave abusive partners.
I was asking if they are in need of anything specific right now, and the person said that they show up there with literally nothing, so anything, including clothes, blankets, toys, food, shoes, etc. was needed.
It was a nice reminder to me that instead of taking things to Goodwill or reselling them, this is a good option. I can't imagine how hard it is for these women to up and leave, and really, anything that makes it easier for them sounds good to me. I plan on donating any duplicate (or even just excess) toys DD gets this Christmas, among other things.
Re: a little PSA:
I plan to take Lily's re-usable stuff to a kid's charity in our area. One of the very cool things they do is they have created a sort-of half-way house for kids in the foster care system. It's large enough to keep brothers and sisters together that would have otherwise been split up. If you're in the Tampa area, here's the info for bringing donations.
