36 Weeker Question

Is your 36 weeker, a month behind in milestones?  DD started smiling late and hasn't rolled yet.  Is this the reason or am I using it as an excuse?  Example, I don't make DD do tummy time a lot because she starts crying, is that why she's not rolling or is it because she was early?

Re: 36 Weeker Question

  • All babies are different.  DD didn't roll over until a month or 2 late, and wasn't able to sit up on her own until a mont or so later.  However, she was on time for crawling and was walking on her first bday (where some full term babies don't even walk until they're like 15 months old).

  • DS was behind for a long time but finally at his 18 month apt yesterday they said he was "on track."  That was music to my ears!

  • Because of the back to sleep program, a lot of babies roll later now, so I don't think it's considered a delay until about 6 months.  My daughter has motor delays but they were pretty obvious to us (also because we have an older son) and she can't roll yet.  She was a 36 weeker and she's about 3 months behind.  From what our physical therapist tells us, rolling by 6 months and sitting by 9 months are on schedule.  Tummy time is really important though so I would try to focus more on it.  The more you do it, the less she'll cry - I promise!  Try getting down on the floor with her and holding up a toy with lights or music or that rattles.  That has helped a lot.
