*Bitsykelly* or other c-section mama ?'s

I do have a couple specific questions if you don't mind...

Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord?

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word.

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry)

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on?

Re: *Bitsykelly* or other c-section mama ?'s

  • I can answer these questions too!

Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?  I walked to the OR myself, DH stayed behind.  Which is a good thing.. they prep you in the OR and scrub you down and put in the cath, and then call in your DH when they are ready to start.

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord?  As soon as they got the baby out, they lifted her up to show me and then took her to a little adjoining room - and DH went in there too.  They have to suction them out quite a bit, since c-section babies aren't squeezed thru the birth canal, they are sort of "congested".  DH didn't cut the cord, and I highly doubt he would be allowed to since it is so sterile, they have all the drapes etc so you can't see the "gore".

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word.  I didn't have one, although they did hook me up for monitors beforehand.

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry)  They put the cath in right before they started the surgery.  It feels strange, maybe ever so slightly uncomfortable when they pull it out, but it only lasts for like 2 seconds.  I had my c-section at 10:30am and they took the cath out maybe 5pm and then I was up and peeing on my own that night (of course).  #2 not for a few days... your body is messed up from being pregnant and remember, the baby squished your internal organs and there wasn't much space, so I think it takes a while for your body to "catch up".  They do give u stool softeners to help.

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on  My DH was great, neither person sees anything "gory".  I was draped so just my head was showing, DH sat next to my head and there wasn't much going on until he went with the baby to the little room where they take the baby as soon as they pulled her out.  Then once she was all taken care of, DH brought her over to show me (she was screaming).  Once I was sewn up etc., they wheeled me on a bed to recovery, and wheeled the baby in her bassinet thing aside me.

  • I just want to say GL tomrorow!!!!

I delivered vaginally with my first and had a horrible tear, and for me, the c-section was awesome.  First two weeks are a little tough, but honestly the hospital was great keeping me on meds to control pain that first couple days and then everything was managable from there on out.  The c-section was wayyy better than the labor that I went through!  Can't wait to hear how it goes and see pics of your little one :)

  • Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?  He was out of the room when they prepped me in the OR-just a few mins.

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord? She never left!  They cleaned her off (DH got to watch) and got a diaper on her and a gown and swaddled her then DH got her and brought her to see me.  He wasnt asked to do the cord but he didnt want to anyway.

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word. I didnt have one

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry) I think I had mine in for a day or so.  I dont remember much about it coming out. I was afraid it would hurt, but dont really remember so it must have not been too bad!  #2 took awhile-I was in the hospital from Fri-Tues and didn't go the entire time there-probably not until the weekend I'm guessing? I dont remember but was scared as heck to go! Just keep taking stool softeners!

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on?  He did great. He thought he was going to pass out!! But he sat by my head and talked to me the entire time and we couldnt see anything with the drape so he did ok!

Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?  Since mine was an emergency c-section, and everything happened so quick, he was not with me for just a few minutes when they were prepping, but I was in such a daze from 20+ hours of labor, that time was so odd feeling at that time.

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord?  Evan was in the room the whole time, as all of the equipment/measuring stuff they needed was right there.  DH got to hold him within a few minutes of delivery.  They showed him to us over the screen as soon as he was pulled out.  Unfortunately, because of the way that things went, I was not able to hold him for awhile and because of one of the drugs I was on for labor (would not take it again), I had little feeling for awhile, and needed DH and a nurse to help me hold him the first time (but definitely due to much different circumstances).  My DH did cut the umbilical cord.

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word.   I have no idea..

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry)  I actually had forgotten that I had a catheter until about a week or so ago, I thought about it.  It did not bother me at all, having it put in or taken out.  I am not sure when it was taken out, but I do not think that it was too long into recovery.

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on? My DH is a paramedic so he was sort of preapred for what to expect.  He (we) were just so happy to be having our baby, that none of the other stuff seemed to matter/phase us.

Best wishes!!  How exciting that you will meet your baby tomorrow!!

  • Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?  They wheeled me in to the OR alone, but then DH was in pretty soon after.

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord? No, DH can not cut the cord... It's a sterile environment behind that curtain, and you are cut wide open. But he was able to look over and see them pull him out. They also held him up right away so I could see him too. Once they took him over to the warmer to clean him up DH went right over (and one of the OR techs was kind enough to take all kinds of pictures) then they brought him over to me, and DH held him while I was able to touch him and kiss him! Then after I was stitched up and brought into the recovery room they brought Evan in about 20 minutes later and I was able to nurse him.

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word. No, not sure how they know?! I never even thought of that

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry) I think until late that night (I had him at 4pm) It didn't hurt, just felt funny. Um, going #2 sucked the first time... stool softeners did nothing for me!

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on? DH was surprisingly good/calm. I think he was so excited he didn't have time to freak out. He's usually kinda grossed out easily too!

Good luck! I won't lie, recovery sucked for me... but I was lucky DH was home with me for a week and a half, plus my mom and dad stoped over all the time. But I know other girls who have had c-sec and bounced right back.

  •  Sorry I'm a little late on this, but the ladies did a good job summing it all up.Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?  DH was with me when I got my IV in, blood drawn etc.  Then I walked into the surgery room by myself, got the spinal, urinary cath, then DH came in as they were placing the drapes.
Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord? They get the baby all cleaned up then they gave her to DH to hold.  They can't cut the cord because the field is sterile...DH wouldn't have wanted to anyway.
Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word.  DD was breech for a while, so they did do an ultrasound to check her position.  I'm not sure if it's standard, but the incision is always in the same place, and they wont cut the baby. How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry)They put it in after you get he spinal. I didn't feel it at all.  I can tell you that it came out before the sun came up the next day, but honestly I don't know what time it was.  My time in the hospital was all a big run on day for me.  When you are nursing a baby every 3 hours and you are in bed most of the time, day and night seem to blurr together.  They give you stool softeners every day, and they will ask you if you've gone #2 yet.  I didn't go when I was in the hospital, but when I did, it wasn't a problem. How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on? DH is the type pf person that people joke about passing out in L&D.  But he did remarkably well.  They keep all of the "gross" stuff behind the drape, so it's really "squeamish friendly".  I used to assist in surgery, so I wanted a mirror to see my baby born, but DH nixed that, or threatened to not be in the room with me.Good luck!!  You will do great!  I can't wait to hear!
  • Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?

DH came in just after they started... we both really think they forgot about him! all i remember was laying there, they started and i wanted to ask about him but i i figured they knew to get him! weird i know!

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord?

DH didn't cut the cord- they didn't even ask him. i don't now if he would had they asked. they never showed me the baby till way later, they took him away to the other side of the room, i could hear him crying, they told DH to go and see him, and that they would take care of putting me back together, eventually (and i didn't remember this till the other day when DH told me) DH brought Michael over so i could meet him, but by this time they had started me on whatever meds they give you after and i was getting loopy (which is probably why i didn't remember things)

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word.

no idea, they wouldn't let me watch- lol!

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry)

i think the cather was in till the next day- it was really weird, they put it in pretty early for me, i really really had to go and since they were pretty much decided i was having a c, they figured no sense letting me go to the bathroom they'll just put in the cath now, i told my MIL to check (the bag) and see if i was going! even though it's in you sell have to 'let go' so to speak

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on?

DH took a peek over the curtain saw a lot of blood and Michael's headstickign out of me covered in poo

good luck and don't worry about it too much, just enjoy meeting yoru LO!

  • Was DH able to be in the room with you the entire time or when were they able to come in and when did they have to leave?

I walked down the hall to the OR by myself, DH was getting all scrubbed up. I got the spinal placed in leaning against a nurse (she was so nice too!), and then after they put the catheter in and I believe made the first incision, DH came in.

Is baby in the room the whole time as well if everything looks good with them? Did they give you your baby right away?  Was DH able to cut the umbilical cord?

DS was in the room with us the entire time. I heard the doctor say to him, "oh, hello there!" then he came out. I'll never forget hearing her say that! She held him over the curtain, then they brought him over to the area where he could be weighed and measured. DH walked over there and watched the entire time. He was asked if he wanted to cut the cord, but he was just mesmorized watching him there. DH brought Thomas over to me, and after a few minutes they were ushered into the recovery room, where I joined them a few minutes later.

Do they have an ultrasound or something to tell where the baby is?  How do they know where to "cut"  - for lack of a better word.

With me, my c/s was needed because he had never descended, so after vaginal exams and feeling where he was on my stomach, I believe that's how they knew. From examining my SIL's scar and my own, they are almost in exactly the same place though, so I think there may be a general spot.

How long do you have to have the catheter in?  Does it hurt when it comes out? What about #2, how long till you were able to go? (gross, I know, sorry)

They took the catheter out that night I believe, and the next morning I was trying to go the bathroom on my own. It didn't hurt at all surprisingly, I was prepping myself for pain, but then it just came out. It took until sunday night (DS was born on tuesday) to have a bm, but I think it also might be due to the pain meds, which kind of block things up (but are so worth it otherwise!)

How did your H's do with being in the room while it was going on?

He was fine,he really couldn't see anything until afterwards, when we could see a bit of the blood and everything that they were cleaning up.
