Have To Wait For Week 8 To Confirm PG?

Is anyone else having to wait until their 8th week for their doctor to confirm their pregnancy? I have already had my first appointment to go over family history and have my labs done at 4.5 weeks, but do not confirm pg at the time. When I go in for my 8.5 week appointment, they will confirm by a pelvic exam and ultrasound.

I would feel so much better if the doctor or nurse just said to me "Your pregnant"! I still have 2 more weeks to go and the wait is killing me.

  • Boy do I wish I had an u/s a 8 weeks! I went in at 8 weeks for blood work and health history but dont get an u/s until 18-20 weeks. I should finally get to hear the heartbeat at my next appt at 11 weeks.

  • As you can see from my ticker, I'm into my 9th week and my first appointment is on Friday.  When I called at week 5 they scheduled my appointment and I questioned whether they needed to "confirm" it.  She asked me if I had at least 3 positive HPT.  I did.  She said "congratulations!" and that was that.
  • If you have had your lab work done, call and check on the level of the pregnancy hormones that are in your blood. They should be able to give you a time span of how many weeks you are too, based on the blood levels.

My dr won't do anything but lab work to confirm until 12 weeks. I did get an 8 week us b/c I was spotting, so that ended up being a good thing!

    GL!

  • If you had a + HPT, what's there to confirm?  You're PG.

It's pretty standard in a lot of practices to not have an u/s until 20w.

  • My first appointment was at 8 weeks. My doctor did everything at that appointment including my first U/S. I have my NT scan today so I will get another U/S.

  • I had to wait till i was 8 weeks as well. The wait killed me.  We had a chemical pregnancy a few months before so I was always worried.  I had an u/s my first apt and heard the heart beat.  Good luck
  • i know its hard to wait. My last doc (diff state) did bloodwork and an u/s at 6 wks to confirm. This doc doesnt do any bw and does an u/s at 8 wks, we have our u/s on weds. Its been hard to wait, but the way I look at it, we'll see more at 8 wks than I did with ds at 6wks.

oh and I felt the same way as you--until I got  m/s and feel pregnant all the time! =)

  • It's pretty standard to not be seen until 10 or 12 weeks, and just as standard to only ever have the anatomy u/s at 20 weeks.

  • Confirming was doing your labwork - I assume they did your HCG levels at that appointment. It is very common not to have an early u/s during your 1st trimester if you have had no previous miscarriages or complications. So yay for you! You get to have an early u/s!
  • My OB doesn't schedule any appts until 8-10 weeks.

  • Yeah, I had to wait until 8 weeks for mine.  It was here before I knew it. Smile

No HCG levels. They told me that the ONLY way they confirm pregnancy is by a pelvic and an ultrasound. I thought they would confirm by either my urinalysis or by one of the many vials of blood that they took. I tried to the the H1N1 vaccine, but they told me that I am not considered pregnant until I see the doctor and she does a pelvic and ultrasound.

  • I've had an u/s at my gyno's every week since my BFP (weeks 4/5/6) and I'm having one this week (7) and then will have my first OB visit in the 8th week. Five straight weeks of vaginal ultrasounds!

The downside is--I've had spotting, cramping, and fears of miscarriage. And I'm STILL nervous and scared even after seeing the heartbeat last week (finally).

So early u/s don't really help that much with the worry and they can't do anything to prevent loss of the pregnancy.

    BFP #1 10/17/09: missed m/c at 7 weeks; BFP #2 10/22/10: chemical pregnancy; BFP #3: 1/28/11

  • I had to have a positive blood test before I could even make an appointment with my OB. Even then they didn't want to see me until 8 weeks.

My first u/s will be at 22wks.

That doesn't make any sense at all.

Whoa. Talk about a waste of money on your doctor's part!

I know it doesn't make any sense at all. It's nuts. I really wanted to get the H1N1 vaccine, but since the doctor hasn't confirmed me pregnant they denied me. I would think that confirmation would be one of the first things they do. It's funny how those little words, "Your pregnant" can ease your mind so much.
