1st Trimester

Hospital Tour Today

DH and I along with our fellow preggers friend Tara got to take a tour of the hospital we plan on delivering at. It was pretty informative although I felt like we were being looked down upon by a few people in the group because of our age. I'm 20 but look about 17 or 18 and Tara looks 15 or 16. And the tour lady was a little snappish about a few of my questions but other than that we highly enjoyed our tour! Has anyone else done their tour yet?

No comment on the snappiness. It might have been for your reasons (I look like a teenager, so I know what you mean) or it could have been because you aren't very far along.

Anyway, hospitals can change some of the dynamics (visitor policies, etc) over the course of a few months, so be sure to check back in during your 3rd trimester.

  • Yeah, I think like pp said, you might still be too early to be taking a tour. They might have thought it was a joke.

i agree, I was surprised to see someone went that early. Girl, your on the ball. I haven't toured my hospital yet for the same reason, often things can change and i don't want to keep checking back. kudos for you though for planning so far ahead.

Thanks! I tend to be an over-planner. I'm using this tour as more of a "which hospital will I deliver at" interview. I'll probably tour again when I pre-register.

  • My hospital won't let you take it until you're within two months of your due date. My guess is you could have been asking questions that you might not have had had you taken the tour later in your pregnancy. Or, since you took it so early and are young, you don't look pregnant and they might not have thought you were serious.

Or, you're just reading way too much into it.

  • My DH and I took a tour last week but only because I am trying to chose between 2 hospitals in my town.  Each has different things to offer but depending on which I chose I may have to change providers.  Which is why I am looking now.

Regarding the nurse being snappy I kind of thought the same about the one doing our tour. I don't think it has anything to with the care we will receive later.  I am thinking it's probably bc they really feel comfortable doing them....maybe uncomfortable with groups or thinking about the more pressing matters at work like ladies currently in labor or moms that need to be looked in.  I wouldn't take it personal or worry about it though.  And I don't think it's strange that you did it early...there were a number of ladies in my group that were early in pregnancy.  You are just being prepared.

I like that you did an "interview" tour.  I've got two hospitals in mine town and they are both recommended by people, so DH and I had a hard time choosing.  We only took a virtual tour, but it would be cool if hospitals could do an "interview" tour since it seems like there are so many options any more.

  • I'm honestly debating whether or not I'm going to do a tour. I don't have a choice in hosptials b/c my OB only has privledges at one so... yeah there ya go. I've seen the hosptial enough in the past few months for surgery, don't want to be there if I don't have to LOL

  • I think it's a great idea for everyone to take a tour. Often l&d is very different from the rest of the hospital. We had special parking places, directions on where to go after hours, where things were that might be specific to your situation. And if you should go into labor (not need a csection or induction) than the last thing you want to do is be reading signs and looking for someone to point you in the right direction. I think it's great you went early but like others said I would maybe check back and make sure nothing changed.

  • Our OB gave us all the info on our hospital and DH wanted to go tour hat day. I wanted to wait a bit so we will go sometime after the first trimester.

  • for our first DD, we did the hospital tour and we did it in the middle of 2nd trimester. . however, there were a few women who had particpated in the tour and they were in the first trimester.  I think its a great idea if you are choosing between two hospitals. . additionally, i know we did it early, because Gabrielle was due in winter and we wanted to do it before the weather truely got bad.  i wouldn't think of it for the nurse being snippy or anything. . she could have been having a bad day or something.
